I have a fairly large Record Power combined belt and disc sander. The disc is great for squaring off pen blanks and I use the belt for sharpening my tools. It gets a lot of use for other stuff so I’d not be without one now.
Could I use it for shaping small pieces wood say for making key rings etc. Can you give me some ideas.

Much depends on what model you get. Mine came with a little bit of bent metal that could laughably be called a table. This was eventually binned and I replaced it with something much better. Having said that the table for the disc is a very good size. What particular make/model do you have in mind?
As for shaping wood yes they are very good.
I use both wood and metal on my sander so I should mention you must clean the machine between uses as it’s easy to set wood dust on fire. DAMHIKT.

I use a giant belt sander for flattening burl. Several separated other sized belt sanders,disk sanders from small to large and a dedicated pair of 12 inch disk sanders to finish the ends of all blanks ,All have their innumerable uses,to me there is no magic ,one off combined cheap unit. Stick with a top line brand and quality.

I made a dics sander for my big lathe also made one from an old elcheapo lathe that I use manly for pen blanks.
I also made a drum sander from a small drill press.

Most has already been said. Belt/disc sanders are a very useful tool to own. However, if all you wish to do is square pen blanks then a lathe would suffice. I would recommend that you look at ones with a power rating of at least 350watts and a table that is solid and secured at both sides. A table that moves is not good at all.

Here you go Glen the first pics are a disc sander I made out of elcheapo lathe that had been modified to make "Traditional abo didgeridoos".
First time I used it the banjo snapped.
The last pic is the drum sander I made from a tiny drill press, I named this Derek.

Does anyone use their belt sander to take the edges off before you start turning a blank ?
I do it every time I turn a square resin blank as I think it is not so hard wearing on the edges of my chisels.
