They either got a few in to test the water, or they are good sellers as they are out of stock .. :thinks:

Probably sold out, I am sure lots of people bought them to try, I wouldn't mind a couple.

I regard Toni as a friend she makes for profit with an undeniable skill all her best pens are turned by other expert turners cooperation I applaud. She explores all avenues including the pens mentioned today we tend to overlook the huge sales made that appeal to the ladies in our lives and dismiss new kits etc far too soon thus missing out IMHO. To be admired also are the entrepenueres? spelling like Exotic Blanks who channel the specialists like Tonis floral work through their businesses making these incredible blanks available for the masses like you and me. Having cheerfully spent up to the max on some of these incredible creations in the UK you have seen recently on this forum examples of Georges magnificent blanks.

Progress is exponential, open ended in pens an interesting time for us.

Show and tell expands the horizons IMHO.

More on the nautical pen - here's a couple in sharp focus (courtesy of Toni Ransfield on IAP). The phrase "lipstick on a pig" keeps going through my mind.

Oh - and BTW if you ever start thinking your polymer clay work is even adequate take a quick gander at Toni's canes. You'll probably never touch polymer clay again ...

The nautical is not a 'bad' pen kit overall. Essentially it's a modified sierra with 'bling'. This is a new series design so expect some product changes. So far the only things I have noted is the transmission and one of the pewter kits had some epoxy pooling in the cap.

I am also assuming your 'pig' remark is to the pen kit itself, perhaps because it's a ballpoint or was it the trim or perhaps the weight?

Welcome to the forum Ed.

I think the issue is not with the quality of the kit but that many people (me included) find it a bit over the top in terms of "bling".

David's "lipstick on a pig" comment simply suggests that Toni's exquisite blanks are wasted on such a kit and would be better gracing something more tasteful. Perhaps it is an expression that has not found its way across the Atlantic.

Am quite familiar with the expression and it's common over here as well.

The fact that most here are missing is this. This is a THEME oriented pen kit. Most of these are slated for desk display to the devotee, i.e. navy, marinetime serivces, sea life, sailing, boating, fishing crowds. To the people in these (mentioned) arenas this kit is not over the top.

In this regards Toni's work is a perfect match to this kit.

Seems fair enough, we can't all like the same thing. (Still a bit too "Pirates of the Caribbean" for me though)

Consider this, you are approached to make a pen for an admiral who has spent 20 years in the navy. ... What pen kit would you first think of using for this project?

Or even for someone who races sailboats?

Point I am trying to make here is it's not about us as pen makers but more about who it is going to that matters.

Something with a bit of class, not one that looks like it came from a jamboree bag.
You are entitled to your opinion Ed but I can't agree with it.

I will make any style of pen the customer's heart desires

We differ there Walter I make what I want, not what customer wants.
They either like it or don't have it simples int?

You have a point there Brian, I would expect a senior member of her Majesty's forces to have more taste, moreover, if I were a retiring admiral I would be a bit miffed if someone presented me with a pen made from a $17 kit no matter who made it. Maybe a Caran d'Ache or Mont Blanc might cut it.

If they are daft enough to part with their money I will take it.

I like these as they are and i don't see the bling as much as others .. Love those blanks .. But there isn't many kits i don't like, there are lots of kits that i do like but have never bought. Mainly because i find it hard to come away from the slimline ..

I dislike all of them but if available at a decent price in the uk would buy one of each to make up and display in a little "horrific pens" case. Would make every single crap pen I make look fabulous by comparison:whistling:

There was an expression Lipstick on a Pig the Americans were saturated with this derogatory remark when Sarah Palin ran for Presidency in the US.
