Hi, Guys,

Have been given some Axminster vouchers to spend on tools. As I can't sharpen a chisel to save my life I thought Id buy one that uses those square, round and triangular carbide tips (I can bin them once blunted). Can't see them on my Axminster site so don't know if they even stock them yet. And another thought occurred to me - with Axminster's go-it-alone attitude when it comes to sizing will bits by other suppliers even fit them?
I welcome any suggestions, chaps!

Bob.

Carbide bits are the easiest thing to sharpen. All you need is a diamond coated card and some lapping fluid, or spittle, and place it top side down and rub for a few seconds, hey presto sharp Carbide bit

If you are able to make your own tools then you can buy the carbide tips from a seller on eBay called AZcarbide.

There was an English bloke on eBay selling carbide tools he made himself, but I can't remember his name, might be worth a look.

I know none of that is from Axminster, but you could always get something else from them.

Carbide tools work well and last ages before they dull. If you buy them from the right places the inserts only cost £4 or £5 a piece

Thanks for all that info, guys. I remember a couple of years back when Lord Woody made some of us carbide chisels, and I used mine until the screw thread gave out. I liked the tips because there was no sharpening to do. However, in view of Ray's remarks I'll certainly attempt to put an edge back on the tips in future!

Advice and locations provided solve your situation a good friend showed me an alternate method of freehand sharpening I like and use for some chisels perhaps membership of a club could help you as well. Using the carbide tools require different methods on a pen rest another learning curve.

Hello, Bob,

Thanks for the reference, and the link to the video.

And as for buying sharpening jigs: Two years ago I bought the latest Tormek + all the accessories, which cost me around £400. I thought this was gonna be the gateway to smoking pleasure as far as chisel sharpening was concerned. Six months later I'd worn a valley in the stone that is as deep as the Grand Canyon! Since then I've tried other methods without any real success, and now make do with the edge I can get from my bench grinder. It's probably true that I could perform a lobotomy more easily than I can sharpen anything! LOL!

Hi, Mark,

Many thanks for that vid - it's another way of doing it - just don't let your finger come into contact with that whizzing blade, LOL!

First video took a long boring way to tell you what has already been said.
Second video, you need to sharpen your wits before attempting it, what a tosser init?
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!

I would ask the mods to remove it before somebody gets the idea that because they saw it here it's OK to go ahead with it init?
