Very nice, I have been using Monocoat as a pen finish, their pure seems to hold up quite well....might have to try a coloured finish now? :claps: :claps:

Thanks, yes I was very pleased having only just joined the club.
Glad you have, I hope you enjoy it, it's a shame you've not been before, it's been going for at least 30 years. Well I'm going to have to up my game because it looks like I've got more competition to win a placing. 🤣🤣

I did go 12 or 13 years ago when it was held in a school if I remember correctly, I believe it started quite early in the evening & you had to be off site by 9:00pm.
At the time this wasn’t conducive with work which was a shame as it was closer than the club I joined at the time.
It wasn’t until I was chatting to Pat Murphy on the Dukeries stand at the recent Midlands woodworking show that I learned that the club had moved to its present location & as work is now far more workshop based I was easily able to make the 6:30pm start time.
I like the monthly competition aspect as I really need to turn more, it’s daft as I really enjoy turning but all to easily put it off as I’ve other work to do so don’t make time hopefully the competition will alleviate that.

This months club competition was something you can use in the kitchen so I went for an Ash mortar & pestle, textured parts are finished with Rubio monocoat teak blue oil the rest with their pure oil.

Doug,
A cracking entry and glad you got second prize.

I joined a local club but as I basically only make pens I don't see any point in entering the competitions when people are making segmented bowls and vases consisting of 2000 to 4000 pieces or making a bowl from a12inch x 1 inch piece of wood . When I have never been shown how even to start one. They have demonstration nights on a Tuesday and once a month on a Saturday we had one with the tiny turner. However cost of them coming over cost to members was £30 which I can't justify. I am told they are going to do courses but again costing £200.
So looks like doing basic pens unless I inherit something from a long lost relative as I don't do the lottery........

I know what you mean re the costs Tom, I was a member of a previous club for nearly 15 years but the prices kept increasing particularly as the membership dropped, luckily there are a few clubs within driving distance & the one I’m presently at is quite a bit cheaper.

IT would be different if they took a class of say 10 people at say £15 and we where all doing rhe same thing. That way the teacher is getting say £100 and say £50 for use of the hall....

the days of it being that cheap are over. No offence intended but …

By the time you pay travel ( even just fuel cost) , wood ( or do you bring your own ?) , tax ( an unnecessary evil I agree) , then what hourly rate do you end up with ? Would you work for less than minimum wage etc ?

I agree I was only using the figures as an example. Probably like most here I am on a pension and if it's during the day my wife and I have to do school runs for three granddaughter's
So that only leaves training for me till approx 1.00pm before I have to go........
I only use a roughing gouge and skew for anything that I can make at present.....
Meant to say no offence taken.....
