Looking at these sets there is a few things that i am not sure of, the first is what is the difference between ER25, ER27, ER30, ER32, ER40 etc, and the other is what are these used for that i have arrowed?

They are just different sixes of collets you would use ER25 collets in an ER25 collet chuck etc. I don't know what the other bits are although they do look familiar.

As far as I understand it the different ER chucks take a different range of collets Jim so for bigger stuff you would need the ER40 collet chuck and ER40 collets. etc.

I don't know what the parts are you've highlighted but I am guessing they are reducers so that you can use any range of collets.

The pieces arrowed are the bits the milling cutter/end mill screw into and is the driver.
If you unscrew the large knurled nut from the main body (big nut on the left end of the body in the picture), and look inside the body, you should see a pointy bit facing you, this is the location for centre you will find on the end of the slot drill/end mill.
At each side of the pointy bit there should be a recess, this is where the drivers (arrowed bits) fit.
The drivers have different size threads to suit the differing sized cutters and are paired with the collets shown in the pictures, the collets will be metric or imperial, usually 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" bore.

If you check out Clarkson Collet Chuck you may get the information you need on assembly and use.
I used to have it all but can't find any at the moment. I have a fair pile of end mills/slot drils up to 9/16" that are ideal for flat bottom holes :thumbs:

Thanks for the replies guys, but since posting this i did a bit more of a research, i did find out that the bigger the number the bigger the collets etc, thanks Don, i didn't find the answer to the drivers that you commented on. I have the Titanic collet chuck with three collets and three of these drivers that had been laying around that may come into play in a few months time .. :thumbs:

OK Jim. There are various schools of thought about whether the collar should bottom on the body or have a few turns loose.
I'm sure we can sort it out.:thumbs:
