I don't add anything to my pens and I think unless its very subtle it might stop punters buying them.

That's a very valid point I agree. My logo is basically lowercase d and b, back to back in a small circle, like: db
It's meant to be small and discrete, but to mark as one of mine basically.

Here's a stamp I made for doing wax seals. I figure when I make the pens for people I'll use some nice paper to put care instructions on or whatever, and add a wax seal with my logo:

Just received a delivery of tons of different pen kits etc today, so I've loads to keep me busy now, plus some blanks of (apparently - who knows) 5000 year old bog oak, which has some very n

One other piece of wood I'm really keen to use is something a mate handed me the other day. A really beautiful chunk of Gorse trunk that he's had for years and not really known what to do with it. I'd never thought of gorse as something useful for turning (as gorse iw usually associated here with discomfort & swearing, and black clouds from it burning on the hills), but the colour, grain & pattern is stunning I think:

Counting myself lucky to have this one.

The Gorse is going to be an interesting one, look forwards to it.

There isn't a great deal of makers mark you can get on a pen. Opticians used to use a cleaning cloth with the logo on which went in the glasses case. Not a pen clip but food for thought?

Yes I was planning on doing some home made leather pouches with the initials, but I'd love to have something like a miniature enamel badge, or something even that's printed with a clear hard coating over it etc.

You could make custom finials if the pens you make have removeable finials. You could easily may up a label to fit with you initials and use doming resin then fit them instead of the supplied finial.

Yes I said to him he would get the first pen made from it as a thankyou for the donation as it's well seasoned and a nice piece.

Don't think any of the kits I've got in stock have finials you can remove as such - will check though.
I'll look up doming resin too, thanks! Dealt a fair bit with polyester and epoxies in boat world, but not heard of that before.

Doming resin is very easy to use and works a treat, I have never made anything that small with it, but can't see any reason it won't work, it takes quite awhile to set so make sure no dust or bugs can settle on it while curing.

Ok, great, thanks - good to know it's not tricky.

Now I've looked around and most of the stuff I've seen is the dual syringe type epoxy kits with the special mixing nozzles. Do you generally have to use those nozzles or is there another easy means of mixing precise amounts in tiny quantities?
The reason I ask is that those nozzles don't look cheap unless of course you're doing tons of the domes in one go, making a single use nozzle less of a waste. Is that just what people tend to do, ie make big batches of them in one go rather than one or two here and there?

It wouldn't matter with polyester resin as any volume of catalyst will cure the resin, it just affects the time, and heat, but with epoxy the volumes must be accurate or it'll not set right, so am not sure of another means of being precise besides those twizzly nozzles.

I have bought the two part doming resin and mixed it and poured it from the mixing pot, it is much easier to do a large run than smaller ones as by the time you have poured a few you will be getting better at judging the amount to pour, but I have never poured anything as small as finials so maybe a syringe type dispenser would be better for that.
