Hi Peter,
Yew is very different than pine. Even the wedge shaped block of wood its clipped to, is also a piece of yew and in fact from the same block that I cut the pen blank from. Attached is another photo of a pen made from the same lump of yew. This shows the different colours and grains of this type of (toxic) wood.
