Sometimes it pays to only make the pens engraving to come from them at their cost by the sound of it its a love job from the start.

Hi All

Thanks for all the comments. I havent priced the job up yet but we have been discussing "beskpoke pens" and the guy saw me at a craft fair where he viewed some of my pens and the prices I charge so I don't think they are expccting to get them for the price you an get promotional give away pens off the internet. Having said that clearly I have to be aware of pricing.

Just as background I finish my full time job on Friday, whilst I haven't given it up to take up pen turning full time(I'm leaving for other reasons) - I know its a competitive business and at present I don't have enough sales for this - this job would be a nice starter for me.

Mike Dempsey has given me a price which I am happy with, my main concern is whether the letttering will turn out large enough and taking into consideration what has been said above how it will turn out in the chosen timbers. I have ordered some decal paper to have a go at this and see how it works out. I may also consider offering them presnetation boxes with their website engraves on these as an alternative.

To be fair they want to give the pens to architects who specify their products so they are looking at high end rather than cheap giveaways.

Would have been great to have just been asked for pens and let them sort the engraving, but trying to be helpful I offered to look into this for them.

Anyway thanks for all the info.

David

I hope we have been of some help, glad you have taken the criticism as constructive rather than off putting.
I think my take on the situation would be to show some samples Ie Gent, jnr Gent Sierra and then a slimline pen and pencil set in box for a similar price with the box engraved.
Just thinking out loud init?

Kevin, just for info this is a pen I applied an inkjet-printed decal to about a year ago in an ill-fated attempt to get a local hotel to carry my pens. As you can see it has aged well and shows very good detail. Not a HUGE amount of effort - would have gotten quicker if I had done more.

Was that printed on "waterslide" film? I've been looking the stuff for a while but it isn't that cheap unless you're doing loads and can print out a full sheet.

Bob, yes it was water slide. I hear what you say about using an entire sheet each time, in this case I printed out an entire sheet of the logos because if I had got the order I would have used them. Ah well ... You could cut each sheet in half and use the A5 setting on the printer? Or just do a batch of them at once and have some fun!

I have bought some decal paper to have a go at that. How did you apply the finish over it? was it sprayed? I normally finish my pens in CA which I apply while the lathe is running, I was worried about damaging the decal, so I presumed I would have to spray finish over it first to seal it.

I saw a video on youtube where they just applied ca over the decal once properly dry. That's what made me think about it.

It isn't that much so I guess it's worth a few quid to play

I would recommend searching YouTube for some video tutorials. I first applied a few coats of CA to the barrel, then sanded to 1200 grit to get a smooth base. Applied the decal, (make sure it doesn't have to go over complex curves!), waited for it to dry, then applied a few more coats of CA to seal it before finishing and polishing. Obviously you don't want to put enormous pressure on it as you apply the CA, but it shouldn't lift.

One more thing - it may not be clear that after you have printed the decal you need to apply a few thin coats of acrylic lacquer to seal it, or else the ink will run while you are soaking and applying it.

I am going to give the waterslide decal a go next week and see how it goes.

If anyone is intereded I found a UK company online that sells the paper. I have no connection to them and there may be other suppliers but here is the link.

Make your own water-slide decals using your inkjet printer
