Hi all

Please see the pics.
I have made several pens so far and have posted a few on here, however went into the workshop tonight and it was all bad.
The finishing went wrong but I don't know why advice would be most appreciated.
Two woods mahogany and Spanish olive wood.
Turned as usual sanded with abranet super glue applied in several layer then polished up trough the grades with micro mesh.
Finish on some of the wood is great as I would expect however the are patches that look matt as in the photos.

Any advice many thanks mark

Looks like the CA has delaminated although Baldy may be right.

Me thinks heat might be responsible for this combined with superglue not having fully set in the lower layers. The stuff polymerises and the surface can go off prohibiting the required moisture to permeate through the material to allow it to polymerise/go off. The semi set glue is then heated through the friction caused by the micromesh.

slow down the lathe when using micromesh, dont put presure on it when using it, the stuff polishes by rubbing two surfaces not by trying to bend the mandrel! Also try using Liberon burnishing cream, it boasts of removing "blooming" from CA finishes. This might work, alternatively I might be wrong!

looks like water under the CA to me Mark, but you usully get this after a while not straight away? :thinks:

Just seen your "4 layers" this isn't enough layers if you are going through all the Micro Mesh pads .. Try at least 10 .. Should give yopu a better result .. Looks like you have taken off all the CA when polishing up the blank ..

I use activator to quicken the process on the majority of my pens, not on oily wood .. so only a few seconds waiting time .. Others don't use it at all and only wait a few seconds more than me, but i have never yet had problems using it .. To be on the safe side i would say 30 seconds is sufficient .. I also run the lathe at 1500rpm when using a CA finish ..

Just a mention some brands of CA are magic and others are never going to give the best result, not sure what weather you were experiencing during the process with these pens humid, moist, too cold can influence the result as well. Now your brands etc will be different to ours over here the guys in the UK will know what works for them. I felt your anguish it happened to me but from wrong brands of activator settled on a spray the one Timberbits sells. By this time you have solved your worries good luck mate.

The activator from toolstation always makes the CA bloom ... I only use this stuff now Cyanoacrylate accelerator, Superglue activator, cyano kicker 100ml bottle for all brands of instant adhesive by FiveStar StarLoc adhesives Powerfull cyanoacrylate activator spray pump for use on all brands of cyano glue ( superglue adhesive ),this pr

I have had this happen to me too. Useful advice here. I have never really understood why this happens. The idea of leaving the glue overnight before sanding sounds reasonable, I have certainly experienced the surface being apparently dry but on sanding found the sub layer not set properly. I must try some of these other suggestions. Does seem to be an element of magic in getting a good CA finish. Allen
