First pen of 2018. PSI Tudor Twist Pen.

This is a PSI 'Tudor Twist Pen'.

In pics I've seen of the kit, makers tend to have the body barrel in plain curves.
I thought I'd try and make it a bit more interesting.

I wanted to offset the heavy cap fitting and the ornate metalwork with some heavy turned detail and weight in the barrel.
To bring some balance to it.

The blank is Briar. The pen was turned on my Axminster Precision Pro with all carbide tools. The stain is a light mahogany.
The wood has two coats of cellulose sanding sealer, four of Melamine lacquer and is finished with Carnuba wax.

Although not to my normal taste, this was very enjoyable to make.

My kind of treatment as well Karl over the years, breaks up and creates the design,promotes interest and as you say with a beautiful treatment of the timber. The first time using this kit where the blank reigns supreme.

It's certainly the most ornate piece I've turned so far.

Briar is a lovely wood. Very tight and dense-grained.
Turns and finishes really well.

The kit has a very fussy, Baroque feel.
I thought it might be nice to turn something fancy. My reasoning was that, with the fancy metalwork, you couldn't really go over the top!

The kit isn’t my favourite if I’m honest but you’ve done a really good job on the woodwork and it suits the kit. Good finish as well by the look of it. Nice job.

The kit isn't my favourite either. I find it clunky, clumsy and ugly.
The design is very top heavy, with a lot of weight at the clip end, and really fussy detail on the metal parts.

Good thing I like a challenge!

In the hand, the finished pen is actually quite comfortable.
