Hello from Buckingham

Hello,
I've just started turning.
So far I've made a some bowls, a couple I'm pleased with.
My lathe is 30 years old sadly I lack a Chuck.
Getting lots of inspiration and instruction of youtube.

Hi and welcome Phil. Looking forward to seeing your bowls. There are so many ways to make things without a chuck but it does make it a lot easier so unless it is an odd ball thread size make it one of the next things on the to get list which will get bigger and bigger at every turn. Don't be tempted to go out and buy everything just as you need it otherwise they can just sit and collect dust.

Sadly it is an odd thread 20mm I think
My thinking is get an adapter they do them that fit a morse taper.
Do you think a morse taper 1 would cope with a chuck.
I'm also looking forward to posting photos of my bowls.

I would not put a chuck in the head stock with a morse taper it would be OK as long as you can support it with the tailstock but when removing that will leave it so that it can come out and cause injury. There is however a way round that and that would be to have a draw bar that goes right through the head stock and secured with a nut.

Sounds like a good idea, will see if such a thing is available, at the moment I am glueing to a scrap bit of wood on a face plate, and using the tail stock as long as possible.

Hi Phil - welcome to the fold.

Many chucks come with interchangeable threads on the back, so it may be possible to get one that fits. Have a look at Toolpost's chuck pages. You haven't said what your lathe is, but there may be a thread there to suit.

My lathe is a Tyme, I think they disappeared in the eighties. I have had a fairly good look for chucks, at the moment I don't want to spend any money.

If you do ever feel like spending some money on a chuck it is still possible to get chucks with thread inserts to fit Tyme Lathes. The thread sizes are M20 x 2mm for the Tyme cub and M25 x 2mm for the Tyme Avon.

Both these sizes are available for the Robert Sorby Patriot chuck. Available from The Toolpost and Turner's Retreat

I have an Axminster k100 chuck with a 20 x 2 thread which I used on my Tyme Cub & now use with an adapter to 33 x 3.5.
If you have any problem getting a chuck with that thread I'll swap you mine for an Axminster K100 with a 33 x 3.5 thread.
