For a light weight, you might consider 3/4" baltic birch plywood. Rout channels to countersink a couple of aluminum T-slots which I believe require a 1/2" channel), and into which you can mount some hold-down clamps and other such devices. T-slot bolts could be used to hold down various small table tools (i.e. router table or small table saw) of the channels slots are placed strategically. Still light and portable, but very flat, flexible and convenient. Just a thought. (Sadly, that plywood and the T-channel will probably cost more than the original unit.)
