Tried out the Holdfast Vacuum Chucking System in anger for the first time today.

Started with a 12 1/2 " wide Board 7/8" thick.

The Board is supposed to be Mahogany but I suspect it is Sapele

Very pleased with the performance of the chuck which I only used for removing the dovetail from the bottom of the platter.
I am sure that I could have done the whole project from start to finish on the Vacuum Chuck.

Finished size is 12" by just under 3/4" thick. Just need to get it oiled up now!!

Nice one Vic are you pleased with the chuck

Very much so Woody, It really does what it says "HOLDFAST". I only used it to remove the dovetail from the bottom of the platter and managed to get a right good dig in but the piece didn't budge. I am sure I could have turned the platter from start to finish. It is also so quick and easy to set up, I reckon you can have it out the box and ready to go in a couple of minutes. During the sanding of the bottom of the platter using a disc sanding tool it faired very well.

That is a good looking platter Vic, and will look even better when oiled up my friend ..

I watched their demo video of this chuck, but was disappointed that they didn't show it actually working, so was kind of put off by this .. Did you get this off the internet Vic?

No Jim, I got it when I was down at the South East Show a couple of weeks back. They were doing a show special on it but I managed to sweet talk a bit more of a deal than they were offering. There was a guy doing a full demo using it and I spent a fair bit of time with him and decided to go for one. I got both of the chucks as well 3" and 6". Well impressed with it although I only have a 24 lt compressor I am still pulling just over 25 hg Vacuum and the compressor maintains this only coming on for a short while every 4 0r 5 mins.

The plate dig in survival is a happy one as you say proving when they occur it is a good test for the vac holder mate like the plate great result not much margin for error at that thickness. It had the potential for a split on the lip Vic.
