would you use the same method on a just wood item?
any sealers first?

you can Steve as obviously the burr in this box was treated just the same as the resin and has polished up nicely, but some of the compounds are optimised to work best on resin, if you look on the website you'll see compounds better suited for wood.

I don't use any sealers but a few turners who use my blanks use them, there are loads of ways to finish them.
