Good first attempt Alex maybe rounding over the outer edge would help take away the bulky look. It would be worth getting a block of wood the same size to try it on. I would look at barrel hinges (I think that is what they are called) and are you going to flock the inside

I am going to line the bottom with felt just need to finish the the outside and fit the hinges first
