Just been on handturnedpens.co.uk and I think I am doing something wrong with my pricing.
My wife said but is he selling them at that price and to who and how?
Just going to get some smelling salts

You don't value your work very highly then?
I see nothing wrong other than small pics and a silly magnifier but that's his design he is welcome to it.

His pricing seems ok but I would like to hear Neil Farrers' comments on the slimlines... I recon it will go something like 'sausages...' or is that Grump?

I agree with Grump in that if that's what they value their pens at that's the price they charge. I don't think I would be able to set those sort of prices where I sell my stuff but good look to them if they can get what they are asking.

Noticed he has different prices for different woods so his streamlines range from £18 to £24. Round here they are £19.50 regardless of the wood. Puts his prices in the right area.

Well thanks to everyone.
I now know that I am doing something wrong and need help.
I have looked at Hand Turned Pens prices and although I am trying to sell my pens etc less than half his price I am not being very successful. What's wrong, am I selling to cheap putting people off, is my marketing all wrong, how do I improve my selling technique.
I need your ideas please.

Do you belong to any clubs, organisations or societies? Do you have a local library, if so go and have a chat to them as they like to have exhibitions and while they may shy away from you selling pens you will be able to show your wares and hand out your details so people can contact you. Even local churches have exhibitions, so more people to hand out your details to. Is there a University near you, if so contact them and ask about craft fairs the hold, there's hundreds of people to hand your details to.

You need to market yourself as well as your pens, do not start off really cheaply, it will only go downhill if you do. Get yourself some business cards if you haven't already, make sure they are good quality, everything you show to potential customers should be good quality. You will need to network to build your customer base.

Have you tried any of your local clubs?

I don't know who to sell my pens to, I just put myself in places people go who don't know they want to buy a pen. How many purchases are impulse buys?

What happened in Southport last week?

I know Ian, he was at an event that I was selling at last year at which Terry and Jim accompanied by their Ladies paid me a visit, so you wouldn't be surprised to know that we are in the same ballpark.

Sorry but can't give you any pointers here as I don't want to publish the core of my business plan.

Slim lines, sausages (Walters expression), yuch don't like them. If you are not happy with them don't sell them.

Post a picture of your stall and I might be able to give you a few pointers.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I know my main problem and find it hard to accept.
Since my illness which I had many years ago mentioned in another thread my confidence in speaking face to face to people has taken a bashing, I am ok on the Telephone on Web site forums and on ebay. but face to face forget it. I wish I could turn the clocks back but I can't so I hide behind a smokescreen. Anyway that's enough of my self pity. I will take all your comments on board and do the best I can.

It must be difficult, do you have someone you could take with you and let them do the talking? The Libraries and churches which hold exhibitions are very low key, maybe look around and just drop into one to see what they are like.
