Well when you've worked it out Peter, you'll have a forum full of customers :wink:

I made quite a good one from polymer clay, but buggered it up when I was putting it on a tube and dropped it. I am still trying to do one:thumbs:

truestone is plastic with some mineral in it. Atomised metal, if they weren't so expensive I would buy one and dissolve it in Acetone then see how much metal is left. I really think there is some superb marketing going on there. When you look at the blanks for the knives I can understand the cost, but I don't understand it for the pen blanks apart from nobody has cracked how to make them yet, but when they do:bwink:

Peter

Buy one make a pen and dissolve the off cut bit.:thinks:

I did one of the lava blanks a couple of weeks ago found it very difficult to turn, you need very sharp tools and I had to re-sharpen every couple of minutes whilst turning, dont think I will be trying again

Not a war but they are using a word normally associated with
An age old craft to make them more interesting they are that but
its just marketing.

Peter then you mention dropping your other pen and it broke I guess there are pros and cons for all blanks.

Peter.

No I didn't break it, it hadn't been baked, but when I dropped it it made a mess of the patterning with pieces falling off and I couldn't get it looking as good after repairs. Some of the loveliest burrs are delicate and the end result is worth the wrangling, it's for sure there are pros and cons.

To answer your original question Steve. They are nice enough blanks, but in my opinion, the finished product doesn't look much like real damascus steel. I have seen a few pens made from these blanks on the IAP website and I am not convinced they are worth the money. Just my opinion though, if you search IAP for damascus or mokume you will see a few examples and you can decide for yourself.

Hi All

I'm planning to do one this very week end, we have a colleague leaving after a long time so I thought I'd spend an extra few bob and use one of these blanks, I'll put a photo up when I finish and add my few thoughts on it.

Take a guess
'They' insist it is NOT composite plastic. About 93% of it (if memory serves) is what it claims to be - atomised metal.

Be weary of atoms.......they make up everything.

I turned the Mokume this week end here are a few pic's
021.jpg022.jpg023.jpg024.jpg20141113_210110.jpg20141113_210146.jpg
The blank was easy to drill, as you can see from the dust pan there is plenty left to mix into another acrylic blank. I turned it using a skew until the last millimeter and used a scraper just to bring it down to the bushings, finished through the grits from 120 to 12000 and then the two stage buffing compound that came with the blank on a soft cotton buffing wheel.
I'm very happy with the finished pen,, as I said it's a leaving present so I put some time and effort into it.

As ever C+C welcome but the photography is what it is.

Hi Twister

Yes it does, it has a nice weight to the pen, and it feels" just right" in the hand, I feel happy to give this as a gift.

Kevin,

To be honest, I think Ill give that stuff a miss, it doesnt look worth it to be blunt. Looks a bit like a kids being mixing play doh colours.

Is this one of what they call M3 metal blanks or is it a resin look-a-like, I don't think I have ever seen one like that and I wouldn't want to pay more than a couple of pounds for one.
