My wife enjoys this program and quite often I hear those words you can do better than that and you would make more from those pieces, quite often I miss seeing what she is talking about as I am doing something on this here computer.

Any way I did manage to see a little tonight while doing some of the household chores as the wife is not feeling too well. There was this pair of guys which they took a pile of small branches and twigs to. I looked up just in time to see one of them turning a centre boss for the light they are making from these and just cringed as he was turning what appeared to be a bowl blanks with a spindle roughing gouge my first words were " look at that idiot" the wife did not understand. but do these people not learn the use of tools especially as they make a living from working in wood.

OK Rant over

You should have watched 'The repair shop' on BBC2, the woodwork on there made me cringe, some bits were good but definitely not the woodwork.....and these were so called professional antique restores!!

We had a guy in our Wood group who had his main used chisel sharpened by others who turned used bridge timbers using but a large scraper. His most turned objects were enormous lamps. He made by weaving his own shades and won the major prizes for the annual exhibitions and shows for many years. Scary huh, many a fine object of art turned on an old chisel. His finishes were masterful. The judges were world class turners.

Hi Derek
I'm sure you saw a thread about that prog on UKW recently and there are some who strongly defended it.

We were away for a few days this week in Hawes and I could only get 4 TV stations in the M/Home so as it was chucking it down outside I watched the prog and was appalled tbh.

Apart from some of the shoddy work, the guy called Jay took an old cane recliner to refurbish, in itself a good thing then painted the frame black and one of the support canes blue. Not to my taste but ok so far then made a head rest cushion, again acceptable however what was not is that he then gave money as "profit" to the donor but failed to mention that he didn't charge for any of his labour or the sewing machine he bought to make the head rest.:rolling:

The whole thing is a con and just made up to get afternoon tv figures from people who don't know better.

Just my opinion of course.

Being incapacitated at the moment Yes, I have watched a few of them recently.

It beggars belief of what they are making, even more so the ones that are buying the tat they produce.

TBH I saw one the other day was that they sent some pine wood up to a "artisan designer" in Scotland and then the presenter went to receive them and it was filmed what the designer had made was a few lights.

How on earth can they say they have "made a profit" I'm amazed of how gullible some people are.

It must be "we are filming this for the BBC" that drags them out of the woodwork as I have never seen any in some of the craft fairs I have been too. The customers there are as tight as a Ducks backside. :funny:

Of course, the big problem is that the bbc really really really don't care how they
waste our money. It is absolutely shameful how they just chuck it
down the drain. I for one, only watch bbc in an emergency.

I watch it occasionally and what astonishes me is the price they get for some of the things they produce. I'm thinking of sending them a few of my pens to sell on my behalf. Mind you the Scotish lad who does the blacksmithing has had some nice stuff in his workshop that he has produced.

Obviously the show you love to hate, likewise I am shocked at the low standards on U Tube. Our members brief vids are exemplary by contrast.

I watched this programme a while ago & a gut was stripping varnish with caustic paint stripper & he was wearing a paper mask. The narrator said it is important to wear the proper safety equipment. The guy had no eye protection at all. Caustic stripper in eyes = blindness. They just don’t have a clue.
