I think you are talking mandrel savers.
I also think either your lathe is out of bonk or you are doing something very wrong (heavy hands).
Sling your lathe in the back of your car and take a trip around the M25 and up the A1 to Stevenage, lets have a look at you init?
I still have some weeks to go before the docs will let me drive any distance.

Grump, thanks for the offer but it is quite a feat to get my lathe where it is, in the shed at the top of the garden, top being the operative work. Out garden looks like it should be in San Francisco. It is so steep that when standing outside the shed you can see directly in to the upstairs rooms.
Your comment about it being out of true had crossed my mind as well. My lathe is a Record DML 24X, the headstock, tailstock, and two end feet are mounted to two heavy gauge pieces of tube, these are just black iron tubing so it could well be out of wack. I was thinking of changing them to bright mild tubing as this is less likely to be out of true.

If the skew is sharp and this is still happening it could be that you are using it too far down the piece of wood. Rest it on the top of the wood (bevel rubbing) and gradually bring it back until it starts cutting (it should be like dust at first). I hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs but when its happened to me that is what it is.
