Hi Tom,
If you scroll through a page or so, you will find a video link to how one is made. Have a go, a very interesting project.

It certainly interests me as well Kelvin, I'm going to have a go at some stage. Added it to my huge list of to dos.

Thanks for posting, yours look great.

What finish do you apply btw?

Hi guys,
I finish these shells with a clear water based acrylic varnish. I did try to spray them, but they dried slightly pitted. I use a very soft artists brush and with the drying time of about 6 hours, any defects seems to flatten.

Thanks for that Kelvin. The finish looks great but not what I expected you to say tbh. I've always found that water based varnish raises the grain on new wood which isn't a problem where you can sand between coats but leaves a rough finish where you can't. Maybe the varnish is one of the "hybrid" type as 6 hours seems a long drying time as well.

Can you post the make etc of the varnish please, it sounds interesting, might be useful for some projects I have in mind.

Hi guys,
I seal the new wood with two coats of shellac sealer, using methalated sprit and blond shellac flakes. I then use Manns Polyurethane Varnish. The drying time can vary but usually touch dries within 30 mins. Three coats are applied but only sanding with micro paper on first and second coat. I find that leaving the top coat to harden for a few hours, the final finish is more glossy. I finish off the top coat by polishing with Novus 2 polish.
