OK in a fit of madness bought one of these horses doofers sets a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks to Stiles & Bates I'm now in possesion of a lump of Ash 15 inch x 1 1/2 inch thick, but I'm struggling to see in my mind a finished article.

Anyone got any thoughts or pics of that kind of thing.

I'm thinking some kind of platter type thing with a shallow rim to fit the dishes in.

I did wonder about lime waxing it as well, but maybe overkill ?

I was sure they did make two of those, I've got the other one its still in its wrapping and is about six years old now!!!

Lime waxing on ash? Wouldnt go with that dont think theres enough contrast.

I have made them up in the past on a lazy suzy just a shallow platter and a base with the bearing in between they are real nice but never get used LOL not unless you do a lot of entertaining another idea is something like a cake-stand or a platter sorry no photos of a lazy suzy they are all sold

Phil, we have a lovely Japanese one, I will try to photograph it, it's pretty neat.

Here is the one we have. As you can see it has a lid, the 3 inserts can also be put in the lid, but if you think of the basic box as a storage unit for the inserts the lid and base of the box can also be used to hold foodstuffs and the inserts put out separately.

Thats a great design, like the idea of the lid.

Yes, the lid is handy as anything left in the inserts can be covered for later.

That's fabulous ! Never thought of a big lidded box :rolling:

Beyond me (and the lathe) right now I think, but maybe one to consider for the future if I find the right timber as Woody says.

Thanks for taking the time to post those, much appreciated.

Hi Vic, I used a piece of recycled Mahogany for the base (about 260mm dia. x 25mm thick) and I think the main piece was about 400mm x 50mm when I started.
It is about 320mm x 45mm finished with a lazy susan fitted between. It was the first piece I made on my (then) new Record swivel head lathe

on the japanes theme u liked
how about spirit stain to give a contrast
could even put a bit of gilt cream on

how deep are the dishes?
how big can your lathe take?

that 15" is not needed as they are only 11" ?
if they will fit inside the 1 1\2" thickness you could glue a tenon either side mount in chuck and round off the blank
you could then attempt to part off if you have a tool man enough or part as deep as you dare and saw through the rest
or if you can do the full 15" you could have a "moat" around the outside
you could clean the insides and put a screw chuck through them to do outside
one screw hole with finial \handle for lid
fit a bearing in other hole for lazy susan

none of this makes any sense does it:goesred:

Some of it does Steve thanks.

The dishes are about an inch deep.
Lathe will alledgedly take bigger than I dare turn, 15 should be OK (if I'm missing from here after Saturday you know why :funny:)

Was thinking that I could put a faceplate on, turn a big dovetail in the base, then hollow out the inside platter style.

Might consider now the idea of a moat round the edge, maybe ebonise it using wire wool vinegar and then gilt it.

Or would that look naff ?

I reckon ebonising it will look really smart and maybe some interference powder if you could seal it in afterwards.

They are powders I add to my resin and over black they really shimmer and for example, an interference red will shimmer red depending on how the light hits it, it can be very subtle. I use Pearl-Ex Interference Powders
