They are powders I add to my resin and over black they really shimmer and for example, an interference red will shimmer red depending on how the light hits it, it can be very subtle. I use Pearl-Ex Interference Powders

Interesting, am I right in thinking they would just be rubbed on in tiny amounts and then "fixed" with something like a lacquer finish?

Yes, but they could be mixed in with lacquer or sanding sealer and painted on, it's well worth a test or two, if you would like some I can pop a bit in the post to you if I can find something to put it in. I only have the blue and the green at the moment, but you would get the idea of how it looks.

Some of it does Steve thanks.

The dishes are about an inch deep.
Lathe will alledgedly take bigger than I dare turn, 15 should be OK (if I'm missing from here after Saturday you know why :funny:)

Was thinking that I could put a faceplate on, turn a big dovetail in the base, then hollow out the inside platter style.

Might consider now the idea of a moat round the edge, maybe ebonise it using wire wool vinegar and then gilt it.

Or would that look naff ?

I thought the moat could be used for tooth pics or some nice soft bread or toasted slices
