Take a guess
5amp fuse should be big enough for all but the biggest lathe in the Charnwood range of lathes.

A rough guide I was told as an apprentice was volts x amps =watts so 5x240 = 1200watt, I'm not saying this is an exact calculation just a rough guide.
But as most of the Charnwood range is between 250 & 750 Watts a 5 amp fuse should be fine, so as already suggested your lathe needs to go back, unless of course it's the 2hp lathe.

I think you said you've been to the UK Peter in which case you have seen them maybe just not noticed. These are typical, especially the white one though many are now supplied as shown with the facility to change fuse without removing the plug top, especially the moulded type pre fitted to appliances.

They are outdated tbh as modern circuits are protected by RCDs and MCBs which trip much quicker than a fuse and reset easier, however, "belt and braces" system is no bad thing in my book and a damn site safer than much of what I've seen in various parts of the world.

Thanks Bob wow look at the size of those pins heavy duty or what. Yes I agree famous Idea with the fuse. The initial start current on any single phase motor depending on what part of the cycle it hits can be unbelievable I cant even imagine only a five amp fuse on a lathe. If a lathe is turned on with a heavy block of wood in the chuck all of this adds to the start loading.

Those plugs were introduced in the Uk to replace the old 3 pin round pin plugs in 1947. So haven't been around long Mark :whistling:
There was a radical change in the general wiring regulations which included a new "ring main" system so the change was for perceived safety reasons and though the current RCD / MCB makes it less necessary, there are many thousands of homes with old style fuseboxes so still desirable.
As I said, belt and braces works for me and some of the setups I've encountered in various countries have made me a little nervous at times.

When I was an apprentice in the 50,s in South Australia you could wire your own hose regs were vflexible. In these days of RCD,s etc I get very nervous with the leakages from Fridges, Washers H/W systems etc with phantom trips common from Freezers. I surrendered my License to Contract some yrs ago because two thousand dollars a yr was stupid for insurances etc. Last yr they made a big hit on my Electricians license charges etc so I gave that a miss. The real problem in this country the last person to do any work on an installation then falls for the upgrade to new standards. Gone are the days when I would do gratis installations for mates. One thing for certain skimping on power requirements is very false economy in the event of a serious problem a nightmare. When I started you could when wiring a house change the position of an active and neutral on a power point so long as the whole house was the same, resulting in serious situations.
