Ok... So after my first ever turning attempt at the 3 slimline pens... Thought I would try a different kit. On inspection the yew blank had a crack all the way down... Glum look on face.. Good ol' Internet for info.. Stabilised with thin CA... 11mm hole needed... So even more accuracy needed with my drilling!

This turning lark is addictive!!!

Nice one Steve. Keep em coming mate. I drill on the lathe and find centering no problem. If you have a browse through the posts you will find tons of advice on the different approaches to drilling.

Thanks Vic!

This was drilled on the lathe... But as opposed to 7mm it had to be 11mm and my blanks don't allow for much variation on the hole drilled at that size!

Will look at the posts on this as suggested.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, Yew have definitely cracked it! All I have turned so far pen wise is 7mm ones, laminated, doweled and various other ideas gleaned from utube and this great forum. Lovely wood and very nice pen.

Well done Steve nice pen. The Sierra is quite an awkward pen to find a drill bit for in the UK. Officially it is a 27/64" drill bit which roughly equates to 10.71 mm I ordered a 27/64" bit but it was useless and very blunt so use a colt 10.5mm and have to run it through the blank in each direction twice before the sleeve will fit like you I am going to invest in a 11mm dewalt drill and allthough this will be a bit loose (no pun intended) will make up for it by using Gorilla glue which expands to take up the slack.

Thanks Bill!

I am definitely hooked!

I have several slimline kits to use and had one Sierra pen kit to try... Will be ordering more Sierra kits..and also looking at what other kits people turn... To expand my knowledge and experience - and see where they source their kits from... I got the slimline kits from 2 different suppliers on eBay and one is definitely better quality than the other supplier.
