Hi Sam and yes another welcome from Bill. One of the main stumbling blocks is the sharpening right enough. There have been plenty of tips on that on here in the past. Essential to get a sharp tool, although some scraping can work. I use one of the cheaper wetstone grinders, but use a diamond file to touch up the edge while busy at the lathe. Skew, yes a great tool, easier on small things like pen blanks, stick with it. Great gang on here, enjoy
P.S. DONT DREW THE TEMPER OF THE TOOLS ON THE BENCH GRINDER, COOL OFTEN IN WATER.

Welcome Sam, and stick with that skew. It will pay dividends in the end. There are some great videos on Utube about using the skew. Worth just exploring but remember if it looks really dangerous it probably is.
