Hi all

Has anyone tried one of the Oily CA glues (Like Tree Frog) as a pen finish.

Any comments.

One of the claimed advantages is it's not supposed to stick skin. Don't know if that's nonsense but the three different bottles I tried all stuck skin. Could be I was sold a fake product as it looked like CA, Smelt like CA and as said stuck skin.

Anyone tried a genuine oily glue, what was it like, and what brand did you buy.

Thanks for any input.

Paul

I put a few drops of linseed oil onto a pad of paper then put the CA onto that before applying the glue as a finish sometimes…I can’t remember why I started doing that but it does sometimes make a difference 🤔

Alex,
What sort of "difference" does it make?

Way back when, the finish to go to was BLO/CA ie boiled linseed oil and ca glue, the first coat was BLO and the second was CA then alternating up to 5 or 10 coats depending on your preference. and to be fair for the first 2 years I tried it very successfully in my business as a turner. BUT it stank and I was forever dodging droplets of CA glue when I applied too much on the pad. Then I turned to the even more successful pure wood finish ie make the pen, sand down to 150 grit apply sanding sealer and then sand down to 600 grit and then the Beall buffing system using Tripoli and white diamond. ( I use the carnauba wax part for my bowls etc.). The pens don't need the wax part but the customers like the pure wood 'non-plastic' finish.

after edit: don't forget water is an activator for CA glue and being a human being you are made of water among other things thus it sticks regardless.
