Great restoration Doug and should see you with good service. For small parts that need derusting something that I use is citric acid which is something that is easily got from the chemists it comes in a powder form and you add water leave the offending piece in over night. Just remember that as soon as you take it out make sure you dry the item. Some chemists may ask what you want it for either tell them the wife is making jam or try and explain that you want to derust you may get a funny look, as it also can be used for processing and making drugs as I was informed by my chemist.

Thanks again for the comments

I've used white wine vinegar & salt before Derek which I imagine is a similar acid for de-rusting small components particularly on hand tools, it certainly does a great job, in fact I soaked the Meddings badge into to clean that up prior to painting, though little else on the drill was small enough to warrant that treatment.

Doug when I bought my drill about thirty years (Taiwan manufacture) ago the first thing I looked for was there a hollow in the quill to the centre of the pulley that would enable me to use a locking threaded rod to hold the drill chuck in place. Then I got the Taiwanese motor and threw it away and fitted a 1 hp motor Aussie made. Stripped the quill etc fitted good bearings threw the others in the bin. Countless thousands of drillings later the drill is giving accurate holes with no problems, have not varied the speed ever it is quite fast.

So I enjoyed seeing your restoration and I know it is much harder on an older drill to strip down, clean etc as you have done. Thanks again for the blow by blow description.

Peter.
