All good ideas above. I'd be tempted to stay away from the bags of firewood from the local shop as they are usually ropey softwoods that are awful to turn and I wouldn't want that to put you off turning!
Stick to hardwoods. Don't pass a skip without looking in. If you see anyone having an Indian sandstone patio laid try to get hold of the crate they are delivered in, they are made from lots of good hardwoods, mainly eucalyptus. Some pallets are also great hardwoods.

With a lot of the advice and good ideas here I have picked up a few bits and bobs to have a go at now. The firewood is going where it belongs, on a fire. I have picked up a pack of 50+blanks from ebay at a nice price. If I do find any little treasures in it then I just hope I can identify what it is.

Good news Robbie I once bought 140 blanks from north America blanks from all over cheap as chips the guy in Kentucky buys countless thousands of stickers from around the world (he owns a large saw mill) with some incredible species selects from these. The freight was great and many remain unnamed some simply African hardwood, Brazilian ? etc they worked out landed less than a buck US each. Share your happy news that you obtained what you were obviously hoping for. When he first advertised on a forum he was ridiculed for his prices by the would bees, I spent ages on the phone to him he has been very successful not being greedy or needy another business for fun is converting vehicles to Hummer type conversions I enjoyed the vids etc he shared with me long since gone.

In my wood store I have logs which have only just been cut. Sometimes if I want bowls etc then I will turn them green to the rough shape seal the outside only and throw them in my other wood store after about 6 months I have turned some and they have not moved that you can notice. I weigh them once rough turned and keep weighing until they do not move and stay about the some. If you want them for pen blanks cut them to blank size and leave sealing the ends after a time in the store bring them inside and let them dry even more. I have even been known to put them in the airing cupboard.

Just a word of advice.

Skip dipping, aka removing items from a skip for your own purpose is theft, unless you have sought permission from the owner of the skip contents. All items in a skip, bin or similar belong to the owner i.e homeowner or business, until such time as the skip or bin is collected, then it belongs to the collection company.

If you are caught having not got permission, expect to spend some time in your local constabularies jail, and possibly be charged with theft.

Definition of theft

"A person is guilty of theft if he/she dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it"

We all know it goes on all the time, but you can guarantee the one time you see something worth having, there will be a copper right behind you. In other words as with most things in life, cover your arse.:mooney2:

Never had this so called dillemna I always ask the owner of the skip never had a refusal. The exception was when I was a kid the Embassies in my area had their offices in town in an area where their rubbish bins were placed in the street for collection yielded thousands of now valuable stamps from those bins, since we were not litigeous 70 yrs ago here and because even then I door knocked and had permission always granted. I preferred skinny dipping those early days but with the eye of a born hoarder.Perhaps you have hear of me in stories we were so poor etc.
