Please can anyone enlighten me on ordering from Timberbits in Australia.
Do you have to pay any taxes or Handling fees when they arrive in the UK.

Sorry if this has been asked before but cannot find the link. :goesred:
Thanks

You will doubtless get many responses about individual experiences but below are the facts about what you should be paying from the HMRC website.

"If you order or send purchased goods other than alcohol, tobacco, perfume and toilet water from a country outside the EU then you:

don't have to pay Excise Duty
may have to pay Customs Duty on goods with a value that exceeds £135
will have to pay import VAT on goods with a value that exceeds £15

Note that on all goods from outside the EU, Customs Duty is waived if the amount of duty calculated is £9 or under.
"

What actually happens in reality also seems to depend upon chance.

You may also have to pay a handling fee to the carrier if they pay the charges on your behalf.

Here is a link to more information on the HMRC website.

Oh and before anyone starts on about nice friendly exporters putting lower values on the customs declaration. That is all very well but take note of the last sentence of this quote from HMRC:

Make sure the supplier completes an accurate Customs Declaration

Goods arriving in the UK from outside the EU by post or courier must have a Customs Declaration fixed to the package - completed by the sender. The declaration should include:

a description of the goods
their value
whether they are gifts, commercial or personal items

Some websites will offer to show a value on the Customs Declaration that's much lower than the actual price paid so that you don't have to pay duty and/or VAT when the goods enter the UK. This is wrong: if you're ordering goods over the Internet, it is in your own interest to make sure that the sender abroad makes a complete and accurate declaration. If no declaration is made, or the information is inaccurate, the package may be delayed whilst the UK Border Agency makes further enquiries, or in some cases the package and its contents may be seized and as the importer of the goods you will be liable for any charges.

Doesn't happen often but don't say I didn't warn you.

Finally HMRC are only doing their job and I am only telling you the facts so don't shoot the messenger. Nobody likes paying tax.

It's not only the cost but the weight too . Anything over 2 kilos and there are extra costs involved.

Walter has explained it very well and is a good guide..

I have put up similar comments on previous threads so be prepared.. :vangry:

John the general rule when ordering from TB is to stick around the 80 A$ mark about £50 that way there's no postage charge and usually the weight is low so no extra costs there .

Thanks for the advice, will heed this in the future when ordering from TB.

Sorry to hear you've been poorly, mate. Glad you're on the mend though - have fun with the woodburning!
