I never used it for quite a while, I wet and dried between coats at 1200 and it was fine, I used to get a good finish. After a thread on here, I think David (Jimjam) said about putting on coats and using accelerator in between and since then have been getting an excellent finish still, in a quicker time with a lot less effort.

There are lots of youtube videos on methods of CA finish. I think Walter has done a guide aswell.

Personally I hate the stuff, the fumes are horrible and it makes my eyes run. Lots of people have great results from it though.

There are some great friction polish finishes to investigate and some lacquer finishes aswell. I know Steven has great success with those.

Give the CA a go and try out some different methods, you could always just practice on a blank turned to a cylinder, dont have to waste a kit. You can just turn it back of when your done and try a different way.

Be careful of the fumes though and try not to stick your fingers together.

I've tried it without with limited success. Tried it with and ended up with white globule on the pen and had to turn it all the way back to the wood

I love the finish of CA and yes I use an accelerator between every coat as its main function is to dry the CA. I always give the wood a coat of acrylic sanding sealer before applying the first coat.
I run the lathe at 820 rpm and wipe the CA on quickly and then the accelerator. I only use micromesh after I have put the last coat of CA on and I run the lathe at 3500rpm when using micromesh !!!
This is my method but every turner seems to have his own way of doing it.
Also I only use thin CA. Some turners use medium and some turners alternate between thin and medium.
All I can say is play till you are happy with the result !!!!

That because you have used to much to close to the thing also the lathe has to be running when you apply the accelerator

I swear by CA for a high gloss finish. I alternate between thin CA and accelerator coats and do about 15 coats of each and then micro mesh and then T-cut or Autosol (metal polish cream) depending how I feel. The CA is applied from the bottle at low revs, just a couple of drops at a time, and spread with a folded paper towel.
Try it, cheap bottles can be obtained from various high street stores. Let us know how you get on.

Have used CA with and without boiled linseed oil but never used accelerator, only thing is if you don't give CA time to dry you can end up with paper towel stuck all over the blanks! :rolling:

I do both, depending on what finish I feel the pen needs.

I have never used accelerator for coating but have used it for tubes. Always use thin with lathe at 500rpm and let it air dry between coates.

Sand to 2500 between coates and final coat taken to 12000 and eee wax then Ren waxed all parts after building..

But never use it unless I have respiratory protection as hate the running nose and itchy eyes.

It also give me a headache bigger than a todd of whiskey.. so prefer to keep it to the whiskey as I like the drinking bit..

Alex I am using the micomesh till it is spent but only to 2400 grit and the I use the Farecla 300 and 500.
As I said everybody does it different.
Eammon has just said he puts polish on top of CA. I don't bother nor do I put it on top of acrylics. Farecla which is a cutting compound is my final finish.!!!

On the Timberbits channel on YouTube there is a video showing the application of 20 coats of CA, makes it look easy, I like the cutting of the paper towel to make it easy.HTH

I tried to do a link and failed miserably!

How close is too close? It doesn't say on the tin. I sprayed it from at least 8 inches away and the lathe was running. Can it be used on medium CA or just thin?

I've read in other forum there is a "new" video for sanding with CA, maybe that is something to try as well. It is here.

There is also "old" one from Russ Fairfield
here.

The curing of CA is an exothermic reaction - it gives off heat (and I have the blisters to prove it). Accelerator speeds up the reaction and this intensifies the heat. Add too much accelerator or from too close and the CA boils, trapping tiny bubbles under the surface. To the naked eye this appears as white spots or areas. The only remedy a sChas has noted is to remove the affected CA layer entirely.

Storal of the mory? Gentle with the accelerator - it's a screwdriver, not a hammer! :bwink:
