I think that is because of the aperture setting on the camera which affects the depth of field. I guess that the picture was taken in the way that Brian has shown in his post. When the picture was taken it focused on the top pen and because the f stop was down to something like 2.8, the depth of field is quite small and anything not too close to the point of focus is out of focus. You can try it out yourself by looking at something but also have something in the background. Open your eyes as wide as they'll go and that something if its not too far away will remain in focus. Now squint and the same think will be out of focus.
Bloody Nora Doc you are going all scientific :funny::funny:

Nice to have someone who understands photography init?
When I downloaded the pic it came out that way round which as Paul says is the way it was tooken init?
so must have been rotated to fit for uploading, giving the impression of larger pens.
After cropping and resizing it then reverts to the original perspective as explain by the good Doctor above, simples init?

Strange because I didn't rotate or adjust the image. All I did was open in paint and change the pixel size to 800.

I just left the camera on auto setting with the pens on sheet of paper. Camera is a Canon 400d with 18-200 is Canon lens. Handheld as I didn't have time to set up a tripod.

Bob, is your avatar your dog? if it is, I've got some news for you... :funny:

Sometimes it's a self portrait:wink:

Actually a grumpy fella I came face to face with in Canada last year. He was a bigun for sure and the only reason I got close was that there were two guys even closer and I guessed I'd have time to run to the car whilst he was munching on them.
