As I said previously if you're making your own you can chose any thread you wish.
I would think it a good thing to differ from the norm, the customer has to bring it back to you for repair when the man in the shop say's he can do nothing with it.

Wow, I'm not going to sleep tonight, I'm going to be threading all night and tomorrow there won't be one iota of work done while I scour the net for taps and dies. :funny:

Thanks for all the input is great to have such a source of knowledge. I might just see if I can entice David to mine and get a lesson in pen making proper. hey David? What do you think? eh?

All excited aye Paul a nice easy starter for ya.
Do you have any of Alex's shell cases?
Run an M8 tap up it, it makes a lovely thread in the soft brass enough to get a goodly grip on,
Make a nib end from hard wood / soft metal or plastic and run a M8 die down it.
That's a good basis for the best bullet pen you will make init?

Just had an idea.
If I bought a "standard" nib unit ie Jowo #5 (or other), there's nothing to stop me running a 6mmx0.5 die down it (gently of course, possibly after removing 0.5mm off the dia) and then the problem of the non-standard taps and dies goes away.

This assumes that there is enough material but it's probably worth a go as it's only 0.25mm each side.

Paulm: If when you scour the nets for taps and dies as I have looking for the elusive 6.5mmx0.5 you could lookout for the BSB (British Standard Brass,English sizes only) these are 26tpi for all diameters ie if you use 1/2" it's still 26tpi which I reckon is good for cap to body. Luckily I have a box of them from my Dad.

Off to sunny Crete today so I won't get to start experimenting for a couple of weeks (sob, sob)

I missed this post last night Brian, or I would have been up in the shed trying it. I will today though. Thanks.

Don't you just love that "EUREKA" moment when it all falls into place. Here's hoping there is enough meat on the joint to do it with.
Have a great Holiday.

Twist my rubber arm, mate! All joking aside, Paul Stock (the CNC controller board man) asked if you would like to come out our way for a day and he will take you through things in his workshop? A rare privilege that, and you would learn from a true CNC master. You up for it?

Just catching up on threads while I was out of the country.. So many..:bwink:

Brian is right, you can use any threads you want to make the kit less pens and the idea of running a 6mm die down will work. My dad did that many years a go when he used to make them. However, if the customer wants to replace the nib then the new ones won't fit it, been there done that.

I have the 6.4, 6.5 and the 7.4, 8.5 and the 8.4, (all x5) luckily that's what my dad had left me.. :love_it: used them last when he was alive but I must get to using them again.

We only have one tap of each and remember it being a talking point with my dad at the time, but if you take it slowly and ensure that its lubricated well you should not have any problems.

Anyway, if anyone wants to borrow the above taps for any specials then PM me and will send them out.

For Oz probably Mark..

I would be worried about borrowing them from you and if it was for metal, I wouldn't ask. If I broke one I would have to replace it, and sending it back to you with the appropriate amount of insurance, just in case the postman also makes pens. It is a very kind offer.

You hang on to them Eamonn and show us what you can do with you dad's legacy init?
