The only way I've done it is with drying it as dry as possible and then soaking it in diluted unibond. I works for me but I know there are other/better ways, I just don't know what they are.

Anything so rotten it needs stabilizing goes in the bin. I can't be arsed for what comes off it.
If It looks really sensational I would use some thin CA to get it so I can spin it, then when it breaks on the lathe it goes in the bin.

Buckeye burl (as the Americans call it) is frequently stabilised and you can get it like that from Stiles and Bates amongst others, but I turn it raw, if you cut it, it turns, if you scrape it theres nothing left, but then were turners aren't we, not scrapers, thats something you do on the pavement after you've trod in something nasty.

I'm with Brian, if its that rotten its in the bin.

Hi Dylon don't listen to them grumpy ol gits I have had some wonderful results stabilizing rotten bits of wood and so have many other turners I use thin super glue it may need a few applications as you turn it and remove some off the stabilized wood some turners use resins of some sort and other equipment
As for that ol fart Neil :fart: he only condemns scrappers because he don't know how to use them he's a bloody idiot the idea of using carbide tips for turning pens are in essence scrappers :wink:

Be careful with the thin ca, it does work but don't whiff it, its more dodgy than Stuart Hall in a schoolyard.

I must be odd I quite like the whiff of CA.......mind the fact that I've got a nose job booked at the hospital to sort out my breathing is another story.:thinks:
