I've used Ultraseal Wood Stabiliser, a vacuum chamber and a toaster oven to stabilise blanks the initial results seem quite good but its expensive costs me about 85pence a blank. I've turned some treated blanks but not made a pen yet due to other projects, family visits and a leaky flat roof, but hopefully I will put that to rights in the near future.

I did the button on many occasions but not when it mattered on parade days.
I was at the tattoo hauling cannon in 1968 if memory serves me right.

Buckeye burl (as the Americans call it) is frequently stabilised and you can get it like that from Stiles and Bates amongst others, but I turn it raw, if you cut it, it turns, if you scrape it theres nothing left, but then were turners aren't we, not scrapers, thats something you do on the pavement after you've trod in something nasty.

I'm with Brian, if its that rotten its in the bin.

Neil, inclined to agree with you on the effect stabilizing timbers like Buckeye Burl however the end result is so fantastic its worth the effort I have lots of untreated Buckeye that is like balsa wood and about as useful. Every time I use plastic it makes me curse the ribbons of rubbish that congest everything but then again they have their place as well. I have a superb example of pen parts and a couple of American Quarters to turn some time soon.

Hi ,
I've just bought a couple of large paint pressure pots and a piece of 1" perspex for the top of one of them to use as a Vacuum chamber for stabilising wood, haven't set it up yet, but when I do I'll put some photos up, I'm going to use the other pressure pot as a casting pot to encapsulate the stabilised woods in resin.

Probably a couple of months away from a finished article but I'll; take the photos.

Regards

Kevin
