Station Clock WIP

The Derwent Valley light railway is now a short length of track run by volunteers in a museum setting. It used to run all around the City of York supplying Rowntree's Chocolate factory and many other large concerns with essential goods, most of it is now a network of cycle paths but I have fond memories of it running when I lived near it until 1969.
I was asked if I could make the exterior facia for an existing dial entirely in wood.

The base ring needed to be 1 1/4" thick with a finished diameter of 24 1/2" diameter. ( Yes, everything had to made in Imperial measurements!)
12 segments of Oak Biscuit jointed together then turned.

A second ring then needed to be made and turned to a profile 21 1/2" diameter out of 2" thick Oak.

The two needed to be then matched up with the inner then sprayed black to resemble the cast Iron it would be usually made of.

The Horologist has fitted the main mechanism inside the building and the facia test fitted so the main hand spindle drive can be custom made to length.

Superb job there Neil, just hate painting Oak tho!

Can understand why in this case, but it just looks as though it would have been nice finished in some osmo to bring out the grain..

You used imperial measurements, you mean there are others??
The sad thing, is only we get to see the work that has gone into creating that, the thoughts and processes that it's taken to turn this..... Another really good job though
