I was the gunnery officer in hms Crichton, I used to order the ammunition from RNAD Crombie or Coulport, it was easier than finding it on the beach!

Was the Crichton a Hunter/Sweeper Neil? made from grp? I guess its a ton class by the name but I don't remember it while I was in although I do remember a new class of boat being commissioned. I was on the Wilton which was the first plastic boat and the Bildeston. I was beer bosun on the Bildeston, a far more important job. :whistling::whistling::whistling:

Yes, based Rosyth spent most of the time in the fish squadron jumping on and off errant North Sea trawlers in the winter seas in between Scotland and Denmark. Oh what joy, and everyone is whining about the weather!!!

I take it by pennant you mean the golly! Had forgotten all about that -wouldn't have got away with that today! Saw that there there was one of the lapel badges that we had made go for £410 on eBay. I remember having pocket fulls of the damn things that we gave out to the kids in a hospital at Dumfries one year!

Ed, much of the ammunition that we were using in the 80s was manufactured during and just after the Second World War. Up until the 90s, there was still unused stock of 40mm shells. Unfortunately the same could be said for some of the ration packs, they had manufactured dates on of 1944. The biscuits in them remained in the memory (and colon) of all ex servicemen along with the bromide laced tea.
To this day I can remember the taste - and it didn't work on a 16 year old ....making tents in the mess....:funny::funny:
