Well not as much done as expected the great grandchildren turned up. Anyway once I got into the shed I tried some experimenting with mixed results but not what I wanted so put that on the back burner for another project.

I found a lump of Sapele and cut a small length off of it mounted it on the lathe and turned to a cylinder just over the size I wanted. Next was to use a parting tool to give me a reference for the widest point, while I was at it I cut a chucking point at both ends for later on.

I proceeded to shape what will be the bottom end of this piece measuring against the piece I had already made, turned it around and mounted it into the chuck so I could hollow this half. Sanded and then oiled again with hard wax oil.

Not so as exciting as the first part nothing hair raising, Am I boring you yet

That is all I managed today as I now need to do a little in the garden and greenhouse.

Near the end

Well last couple of bits of the project, by now many will know what it is.

Today brought about the finishing of the piece I did the other day by fitting the other half (the wood not the wife) in the chuck and making a sort of jam chuck as the lip is very small so I used the trusty masking tape to hold it in place while I completed the bottom feature.

Once that was completed I removed it and set to the piece left in the chuck this was turned on the inside as that was straight forward I also took the opportunity to drill a hole in the centre, along. I roughly shaping of the outside. Parted off and the little bit left in the chuck became another jam chuck.

The last piece was put onto the jam chuck and held in place with the tailstock so that I could get the diameter correct at the widest point, I also managed to get the shape correct right up to what will be a small flat area. To complete this part I taped it to the jam chuck and levelled off a small flat on the top.

Now onto the final part a piece of holly was used put into the chuck just so I could cut a tenon on the end. Changing chucks so I could turn this final piece mainly using the 1/2" skew.

I will not bore you with all the sanding and final cuts to get rid of any tear out.

Tomorrow should bring the final assembly and what it looks like all together.
