Hi guys n gals...

...Was wondering if any of you lovely people can help me? I've just come across a job lot of pen kits, and i'm in the unlucky predicament of not knowing which kit/s they are...

...can anyone help to identify these?

Thanks Jim

They are an old Craft supplies kit if my memory serves me well it was called a deluxe kit you cant get bushes for them so they will have to be turned between centres and sized with callipers I have attached a photo of one made up it is really an old pen so you will have to forgive its condition
You drill the large hole first down to its depth the the next size and so on till you have done all three for the body and two for the cap

Just give it a buff up and taken another photo

Nice one Woody i was told you used to get stepped drill bit also is that correct.

Not sure about that one I only ever made a few of them a lot of fiddling around with them but they do make a nice pen that's why I kept one of them

If your just starting out Jim I think you should start with something a we bit simpler. Once you increase your knowledge you should be able make some nice pens from these kits. ..anyone know why these tubes are stepped as I can't see the reason ?

If you look at the finished pen Ed you will see that it tapers down quite a lot the fat end is needed to house the nib as the thin end is to small I did forget to mention on the cap end you have to remove a small amount of wood right down to the tube for the end ring to fit on
You are quite right with your comment to start with something a bit easer Ed like a slimline kit that way it wont be so expensive when mistakes are made

Hi Jim,

Yes woody and Walter are correct, I think I still have the drawings for them in my collection, and yes I still have a couple of old kits as well.

I would not recommend them to a beginner in pen turning as woody states they will need turning between centres.

If you want a drawing of them let me know and I will have a root around to see if I can find it.:rolling:

Craft supplies kits for sure, i made a few of these a few years ago and they certainly do need a bit of experience when making them as Woody states there is no bushings. I had to buy the stepped drills from the USA, i searched the UK for them but i couldn't find them at all over here ... :nooidea:

Also i am sure they had one very similar but was a closed end one ... :thinks:

Must make two of us then..:winking:

My dad was very "fastidious" in keeping the old drawings of pens that he has made over the years. Many I made with him and learnt the hard way when I got a clip around the ear ole for getting it wrong..:goesred:

When the girls emptied his bungalow I think some were thrown away as a pile of Tat..:nonono:

Oh well, at least I have some..

There is a chapter on them in 'Turning Pens and Pencils' by Christensen & Burningham, which was first published in 1999, so they must go that far back....and beyond.
