This first pen is a streamline made from a bamboo cutting board obtained from B+M. The board cost £1.99 and I got 16 blanks from it, some across the grain like this one. That works out at 12.5p per blank, not bad eh!

The second is my attempt at a herringbone pattern using Plum and African Blackwood on a slimline but with a streamline waistband as I like a slightly thicker pen. No prizes for guessing what went wrong! Yes, you've guessed it, my barrel trimmer grabbed and ripped several layers off and I didn't have enough to re-do the bottom tube completely. So, to save the pen I used three squares that I did have left over and made the bottom three rings. Shame as I think it would have looked OK!

Both pens are excellent, I have a bamboo cutting board which cost me £2 at a boot sale ! I think you should tell people that it is a design feature not a mistake on the second pen !

I don't think the herringbone would have looked okay, Dave - I think it would have looked stunning! Even with the 'design feature' it is a classy pen! Keep trying with that one. The cross-grain bamboo is rather nice too.

Hi, Dave,

Well done spotting the potential in that bamboo - it looks good! And...if you hadn't mentioned the tear-out causing you to modify the herringbone I would not have noticed the variance in patterns. I reckon it's bloody good - well done!!!

Bob.

A couple of fine pens there Dave great patterns, is the bamboo made up of thin slices?
I have a couple of bamboo chopping boards, damn things are hollow with just a thin layer of bamboo.
Dunno if I fancy slicing and joining em but if that's how they come out it could be worth the effort.
