In the pics the light reflection on the ends is unbroken on the barrel is serrated hence the question since all pics depend on the light source and angles this can show or mask or distort or add something that does or not exist. The curious result in your pic is an oxymoran as the middle reflection on the front end is smooth as with a serrated reflection off the same section above it. My experience also tells me with timber the light will glance off variations in grain differently in your case this gives rise to Les asking your answer is valid only you will know thanks for your answer Les now will know.
