If Dan is to make a go of this he realistically needs a good mover and the harsh reality is that whilst the Roman Harvest is a great kit David Has got that kit with that price reasonably sown up. Whilst we all like the RH, its hardly a fast mover and Dan needs volume to pay for any tooling and to generate sales outside this forum world - most woodturners who make a few pens turn a few slimlines and thats it, the transition to RH is unlikely to occur.. The one hole in the market that sticks out like a sore thumb is a good quality pencil. most of them are total crap, I have found the bodge it refill from TB to be very unreliable, I no longer sell it, be it very briefly at the outset. The Vertex is a cracking pencil but limited in its appeal as the design is very masculine and overall it isnt very elegant. So as a design brief a good quality 2mm lead pencil, clutch mechanism, that appeals to both male and female at around £6 max per kit, preferably £4 and you've cornered the market.
Fountain pens and rollers, cross fingers if the copy is good and the threads smooth, I'll have the first 100 please Dan!!! Gold Chrome and Gun Metal. If you have a choice of developing one over the other, put the rollerball on the back burner and launch the FP first.

If you really want to develop a top end pen then the nouveau sceptre is a good pen for half the retail price (where it should be priced if it hadnt been for horrendous design royalties pushing up the price), you should be able to bring the price of this one down to around £10 a pen where it would be very attractive and probably a reasonable seller.

That's my sixpenny worth.

I must admit it is great value Neil for sixpence. I am told samples will be ready mid August so hopefully ready to show in York and get my personal Turner and photographer (Terry) to take some snaps.

Sixpenny and sixpence do mean slightly different things young Dan! I'm sure some old codger, sorry venerable forum member could enlighten you, but I am also too young:whistling:
I believe Terry does have a reputation to live up to, so bring plenty of samples!:devil::funny::funny:

when I was a kid 6d was the price of a bag of chips... wrapped in newspaper of course!! Pass me my Zimmer!!:sob:

I used to get a tanner on a Saturday, walk 6 miles with my mate to the cinema, pay thrupence to get in and thrupence for sweets or ice-cream, then a 6 mile walk home again and never once was I abducted or played with by Jimmy Saville, you tell that to young people today and they won't believe you:funny:

I agree with You Neil, but the question was

"what kit outside the UK would you most like to see sold at a good price in the UK?"

I agree he will need a quick movers but the "stack em high" theory is already rife in the UK and I believe that Dan will just become another one of those if he takes that route.

If he sticks to "quality" I'm sure he will get the reputation for delivering such a good quality and get repeat orders just on that basis.

Only my opinion..:rolling:

I think it is a fine balance. I want to stock quality and the long game is to deal with dayacom pens. Working on my own range can only help reduce costs to the end user, offer something unique and help profit margins. At the same time I want to keep increasing the lines I can offer you all

I have never been asked for a Pencil, but then I don't trek around fairs so there may be a market in that market. Dan you need to look at the size of market, there might be a need for a Pencil and you may be able to corner the market, but how many pencils is that market?

If you can develop a quality product alongside your other ventures you will spread your risk, I wish you the best of luck.

Great ideas Dan,

You will need the "uniqueness" to gain the customers that want something different than the dross that is out here in the Uk at the moment.

With a bit of luck you might be selling over the pond with you own spec pens..

Look forward to the next chapter..

Eamonn,

OK - its a fair cop! and you are right, that was indeed the question. However, I rephrased the question " What kit do you want me to stock thats difficult to get hold of?" and I answered that with a few business constraints attached, not the question that was asked!

Good to hear that you are going to deal with quality Dan, and a comaprison with Gavid Lims business model is an interesting one. Milylime is another of the pseudonyms of Dayacom, not very well disguised but regardless, they produce the Sierras, Sierra Stylus, Pristina, Lucida, Roman Harvest and probably a few others for TB, Quality where quality is required. The Streamline, cigar, euro, and JR Gent are produced, I suspect by Rizheng.

However, I digress and Dans business model is soley his own affair! But the best of luck with it because I think if you can do what you hope then you will have a winner, but I dont expect to see you on the top of the Sunday Times rich list on the back of Pen Kits!

So, the answer to the question from my perspective, is the kit that Dan is about to launch!! (with the proviso that the quality has been maintained). Because I am looking at the question from a commercial perspective it doesnt really affect me too much as I can get most kits at reasonably short notice at less cost than UK retail, but I would like to get hold of the Nouveau Sceptre more cheapily and more readily than we currently can.
