I've made a few pens with x cut oak & the always look great, better than long grain oak I think. When I turn open grain timber like oak for pens I seal with thin ca to fill the grain sand & finish with medium ca. This gives a smooth finish.
Love both of these pens Billy, the grain is great.:thumbs::thumbs:
