Eamonn, you're Dad is right! I had a lot of plain-looking elm blanks that appeared to be of no use for pens. Then one day I started playing around with stains and colourants, and BINGO! As soon as I rubbed some artists oils Burnt Sienna on one of these blanks the grain instantly revealed itself. It turned into furniture-quality wood, and the blank went on to become a nice pen. It may be that you won't get that coming-alive look with all woods, but it certainly works with elm!
