As I have stated before the lathe I use for my pen turning is an adapted metal working lathe. One of the issues I have is it does not have a conventional tool rest when using gouges. I had a good look at it and have decided to machine a proper tool holder to accommodate the use of a gouge.
I...
This morning I took these pics to show this tool holder to enable the use of a Dremel and various disks ,the one fitted Is A Diamond to cut some real tough stuff. The Dremel is just sitting in the holder not firmed up it mounts on dead centre. I cut grooves for spring clips, cut brass tubes etc...
I spent the day turning pen No 5. A Sciroco I used a hardwood blank. I will try and post a pic later. I am using a metal lathe for my pen turning because I already had the lathe before I discovered pen kits. I am building up a system for turning pens on my lathe. First thing I do when obtaining...
Hi all know it’s probably cheating but thought they might help me a novice...
While I don’t think you would use a sharpening system... mine is the Robert Sorby Pro.
Am I right in thinking you just hone these very gently?
Kevin
Ive decided to have a go at making some rings using stainless steel ring cores as the base. So Ive managed to make one successfully, but it now appears that was a fluke! Problem is I'm struggling to form the hole in my wood blank to take the ring core and the issue is that no matter what I try I...
When I went to see Vic back in the spring, he mentioned the Robert Sorby Spindlemaster and I bought the micro version last week. Specially made for pen-making, it's only small, but so versatile.
This week I've made a couple of Indian Rosewood Mistrals, including the accents using this new tool...
I'm putting my kit together.
I have some nice carbide chisels being made up for me by Glenn at UK woodcraft and carbide chisels in Essex.
I'm looking for a good quality parting tool for pen work. Something to part small projects of course, but also to cut tenons and grooves.
Can anybody...
So we got a SeaShell blank on a Gunmetal Sirroco
The blank was a gift from the US and thought it about time I had a go.
1st was the drilling, made sure I gave myself extra both ends just in case, but no problems there.
Carbide tool was required, very light cut and I had it at full speed...
I find it much easier to use jigs for sharpening so I made these blocks for some recent tools. The rectangular block is for my 10mm round skew, the large triangular block is for my 1/2" point tool and the smaller one for a 1/4" detail tool.
M6 set screws hold the tools in place whilst sharpening.
Many will know that the Jet I bought last year has been giving me trouble ever since, so finally Brimarc, with considerable assistance from Dave at Turners Retreat from whom I bought it, have agreed to take it back, and I'm glad to see the back of it.
Sadly Turners Retreat don't have anything...
I know a number have made your own tools, but I just wanted to ask where you got the tool steel from, and whether as it seems HSS with 5% or above cobalt is the ideal choice. I have already bought the steel for the shafts and I feel confident in making up the handles :) . I was looking at 1/4" x...
I've been having a few turning issues recently and it's more noticeable with fine work like pen making. I thought it was me then realised that the problem is with the tool rest. My tools are sticking too it slightly as it seems to be magnetised. I have another tool rest and that's fine...but...
Hi all,
Selling a couple of pens generate money, and money need to be spend :winking:
So i've buyed me a set of the Robert Sorby's Turnmaster and i was wondering if someone else here use this tool and is familiar with it.
I give it a try and i'm really satisfied, very easy to manipulate and...
I could not get ten chisels to look at it, the first half took me an hour and a half. Then in my memory bank I remembered a Dutch Turner at a Turn Around hours from here while everyone did interesting things he made a masterpiece nearly three feet across of the angriest burl you could imagine ...
Does anyone on here have a Tormek with a standard wheel...and have trouble sharpening a skew? I bought a slew a couple of years back from Axminster. Can't remember off the top of my head but I think it was Diamec or something like that. I couldn't get it sharp...or shaped...in fact, the Tormek...
Just what you want on a Saturday when you're trying to buy an additional fan heater for the garage, to find out that the credit card has been abused to the tune of £700 through a uk tool website
No idea where the scoundrels scraped the details from, anytime it's used online I always check for...
No where on the floor for the small vac, it will fit behind the lathe when I clean up(just finished making this unit.
I used high pressure water pipe fittings).
Drilled and tapped two 6mm threads in the tool rest holder. (not much width to work with).
The idea is the extractor moves with the...
"In your never ending desire to purchase every turning tool known to mankind I see you found some new ones." Little does she know there are LOTS left to buy. Good thing I make enough money selling blanks to feed tool purchases.
I attended a program where Mike of Hunter Tools did a...
