sooooooooooooooo, you were partly to blame for the fact that my normal 10 minute commute home past the NEC took 45 bloody minutes tonight :rant::rant:

Goes to show a lot of people who have caravans can't bloody drive even without the things attached.

:vangry:

No "slight" dislike here, comes from having to spend 30 weekends a year, every year, in one when I was a kid as Mum and Dad were caravan mafiosi :funny::funny:

But it hasn't affected me at all
We didn't encounter any hold up getting away from the NEC

No, a near homicidal hatred of the bloody things. Why would anyone want to live in a mobile shed when hotels have been invented?

A holiday in a caravan appeals as much as a night's sleep on a bed of nails. And yes I have tried it, never again, I would rather cut my own ears off with a spoon.

And there should be a separate road system for them (and cyclists), and it should be on the planet Jupiter. :nonono:

And if that wasn't enough, diddicoys live in them. :ave_it:
And Walter, we're getting practice in for our retirement home of a 68' narrowboat.

Not going to make it this year, mostly because we blew a wedge on a Sprite Major 6 earlier in the year so couldn't possibly risk seeing something we liked! I'll join your convoy in Northumberland, lads - between my Navara and a 7.5m 'van we can be a roadblock in our own right!

I'm guessing CT1 is a bit like Sikaflex? If so not much good for segmenting because it will be designed to retain flexibility once set.

What reason could there possibly be? Enjoy yourself. I will be in a comfortable hotel somewhere.:devil::devil:

Right Walter, I'll chip in to the fund, get as much of this ct1 stuff as we can and redo the White lines with the stuff, try doing the a1 in Yorkshire with it. There's nothing else worth looking at in Yorkshire, should keep the locals amused and keep these holiday boxes out of the way for a while.

Less of the slight please Ray, why anyone would look forward to spending two weeks of your hard earned holiday in an enlarged plywood coffin with poor ventilation and inadequate cooking facilities is somewhat beyond me, but I do appreciate that others do find it enjoyable, but why still beats me.

What am I missing Neil? Don't you spend a fair proportion of your time in a motor home? Or is that the problem? :whistling:

Well, a great can of worms has certainly been opened with this thread. To all the caravanners out there, ignore the 'Philistines', they haven't got a clue. I was at the show Tuesday, not looking for a 'van but enjoyed spending time with like minded people catching up with the market's innovations.

Well, I do seem to have started something.

I am sure you think you are enjoying yourselves, but you will never convince me that it is an enjoyable form of holiday or even a holiday at all.

Edie and I both love cooking, we are off to the Glasgow Good Food Show this weekend (staying in a hotel within walking distance of the SECC) but when we go on holiday we want someone else to do the cooking, make cups of tea and clear up afterwards and make the bed and clean the shower.

Spending the equivalent of a dozen or so foreign holidays on something that then has to be insured, stored for the 46 weeks of the year when it is not in use and then is charged site fees at the destination is not my idea of value for money. Nor do I wish to restrict my choice of holiday destinations to places I can drive to.

Slopping out has even been phased out in prisons nowadays, sitting in a deck chair in a field is not my idea of fun (if I wanted to I could go and sit in one of my farming friend's fields for free) and I could not live with the embarrassment of sitting at the front of a long line of irate road users with places to go and things to do so I would end up spending most of the time in lay-bys hiding my face.

I have lived in Northumberland for all of my 62 years so I know my way around it well enough to avoid the roads that are suitable for caravans (and the unsuitable ones they still insist on trying to use) so unless I need to travel up the A1 which is mostly avoidable forming a convoy will not purturb me at all.

So happy camping to you all, but I will stick with having a proper holiday thanks.

No offence to anyone is intended and I know I will not convince you of the error of your ways any more than you will convince me to take it up.

David,

I am a miserable bastard at the best of times and finding someone to share the confines of a box, regardless of whether the propulsion is self contained or otherwise is not my idea of fun. Necessity, yes, and I do find my own company very pleasureable for short periods of time. However, I would never dwell on the niceties of a thetford cassette dung container as a form of conversation, nor, as Walter has highlighted, sit on a rather uncomfortable folding metal seat in a field somewhere. About two miles away near Arlesey, there is a bridge of arguable architectural merit that overflies the London to Edinburgh main line railway line. Trains fly through at all times of the night. Why oh why do hoards of caravanners take their vehicles and nestle in the shadow of a flyover carrying speeding lorries towards the A1, a noise interspersed with the sound of a passing high speed train? They sit there all weekend? The only thing of interest in arlesey is its reputation of having the longest high street in the country! It is unofficially a dump.

I do spend around three nights a week 50 weeks a year in a motor home, yes, but I'd much rather be at home! I did spend several weeks in one of these boxes as a child but my therapist says I'm nearly over it!

On thing that irritates me is seeing a huge rig heading North on the A1 whilst an equal and opposite rig is heading the other way, so here's an idea for you, a caravan share scheme. Basically if you live in St Austell and are going to Aberdeen and someone else whom lives in Aberdeen wants to go to St Austell why not just swap 'vans thus saving both of you very long journeys and hundreds of litres of fuel and saving the rest of the population from being inconvenienced.

A clearing house system to administer the system could be funded from the fuel savings alone.

Or just park all the damn things on a static site and hire one when you need it.
