Oh what a gay day :whistling: horses for courses as they say. I would equally detest having someone wait on me hand and foot in a hotel. We have timeshare and occasionally go abroad but it's getting too expensive to fly to the states.

Can't stand hotels, with fawning but inept staff who aren't on holiday and don't give a flying f... whether you are enjoying yours or not.
Can only get some tepid cup of muck which they pass off as tea or coffee and food which is overpriced just because someone's drizzled some fluorescent goo all over it and called it a la cart (dung cart I presume).
My caravans seating is nice & comfy, as is the bed, the cooker cooks whatever is put in it just like at home. I don't mind driving the 10 hrs from here to Cornwall because I know I'm going to have a nice relaxing time down there on a very quiet camp site with no pubs, clubs or other noisey establishments near by.
& best of all, it's usually just me & the wife so lot's of peace & quiet (when I close the caravan door & leave her outside!!!:funny::funny::funny:)

Wish I could've put it like that myself. The perfect description of why caravanning/camping is so great.

My driver for caravanning is somewhat different. Have any of you 'hotel jocks' tried staying in a hotel with a three-year-old and a five-year-old recently? Nah, didn't think so ...

Not only is caravanning waaaaay cheaper than hotel bookings for four (even with the 46 weeks of storage factored in) but also waaaay less embarrassing ('cos I don't have to endure two overtired kids wreaking havoc and throwing their high-priced food around the restaurant). Yes, the 'van parks in the middle of a field - so the kids get tossed out the door as soon as they wake up and they cycle the bikes around or play with the other kids all day. Try doing THAT in a hotel room!

I thought CT1 was costpode and looked it up CT1 1AA is Canterbury.
You could all truck your vans down there and plague them init?

Like Neil I had my share of living in a van and working my way around the country when I was young enuff to do it.
Never had the luxury of towing a full house behind me though, I am sure it's fun.
Got fed up with people thinking I was a gypo and moved on to foreign holidays and swish hotels when my Drain made me init?
Now I throw expensive food around a restaurant and scream cos I am tired.
Next year I will lay on my back and wait for my nappy to be changed, oh happy days to look forward to.

even with the 46 weeks of storage

Wouldnt it be cheaper to store the van in your own shed?:thinks:

There is a covenant in our title deeds which doesn't allow us to store a caravan on our property. Which we get reminded of every time we bring the darn thing home to prep it for a trip. Sometimes by the borough council after six neighbours called to complain ...

:funny: Great thread with some entertaining comments. After 6 pages if this had been a different forum, world war 3 would have broken out by now:funny:

It's 25 years since I owned a touring caravan but we had a succession of them for many years when the kids were young and we all loved the experience. I was lucky enough to be able to store at home and it was used at least once a month for weekends at a minutes notice. A short drive to the Scottish borders relaxing couple of days fishing, reading, sight seeing and the kids playing happy, healthy and safe outdoors. Good for them and us after a hard week at work!
It's not a cheap holiday, caravans are expensive especially when all the add ons are counted up and you need a decent vehicle to tow with. It is definitely a way of life and what's wrong with that. I use hotels now but always self catering or b&b as I like to choose where I eat.

I wouldn't do it now, too many idiots on the road and far too busy but I'd throw in the comment that many of the big hold ups on the roads that I see are not directly caused by the caravan but by the slow moving lorry, tractor or more often the little old lady or gent doing 30mph in front of it. I see it now every day without a caravan in sight and it drives me nuts:vangry:

Modern cars and caravans have little problem maintaining 60mph on our single carriageway "A" roads and as long as they do so the only people they hold up are speedsters so they are helping the police to enforce the speed limits maybe?:whistling:

I was a regional manager for a number of years with the second largest manufacturer in the UK and in those days vans were overweight and manufactured like model aircraft, not these days, technology has moved on. There always will of course be clueless idiots who hitch up and drive off but isn't that the case with everything.

Totally agree with you Bob on virtually all you say, the only comment I would make to clarify a point. On single carriage A roads, vehicles towing a trailer can only do 50mph when the national speed limit (60) applies.

One further point I would add is even on motorways, most hold-ups are caused by one lorry trying to overtake another when their difference in speed is probably only 0.5mph and it can take many minutes and lots of miles to get by. This results in more or less all cars trying to squeeze into the 'fast' lane, even the slower cars. Not caravanners of course as they aren't allowed in the third lane of a three lane motorway.

Well what a lot I have missed whilst away overnight in my comfortable hotel with first class food, competent yet unobtrusive staff and stunning views over the Clyde.

Now I take exception at being called pikey. I ain't no pokey :ave_it:

Apologies for that, no offence intended.

You are staying in the wrong hotels mate. The one I stayed at last night was the same on that Paul Hollwood used and where the Hairy Bikers stayed a couple of years ago when they were doing the Good Food Show. I don't think you would find any of them eating fluorescent goo.

I accept that as a perfectly valid reason for you to continue caravanning, please stay away from my hotel. :funny::funny::funny:

I agree, as ever we can disagree and take the pi$$ without acrimony.

I agree with that too. Time to bring in a driving test for the over seventies? or even the over sixties. I would happily take it.

Yep, another of my pet hates.

OOPS forgot about that Dave, however many of them travel at 60 anyway in my experience. Even back in the old days I can honestly say I believe I never once held up a vehicle travelling within the speed limit unless it was caused by some crawling scared of the road driver in front of me and even then I would pull into the first available layby to let them through to "bully" the car in front:whistling:
