What do you mean by a run out? The headstock circles the tailstock in not a round circle, more of an oval one...

Exactly what you've described. It wobbles about when it's turning. The three most likely causes are bent shaft, worn bearing, or dirt in the quill/mis-fiited deadcentre. The last one is easy to overcome but the other two would probably mean it is cheaper and easier to replace your lathe. I notice there is another thread from you this morning about new lathes, which I haven't read yet, but I'm guessing you've reached that conclusion too.

Before you do anything to your headstock clean out the bore thoroughly and clean the dead centre to make sure that both are spotless and can seat properly, then do the same with the tailstock.

Peter

Agreed, lots of dirt apparent in the pictures. Give everything a good clean and check the bore.

Yes I will. You should not give up your financial control to someone else. Once the bills are paid and there is food on the table what you do with the rest of your money is your business and what she does with the rest of her money is hers. Works for us and we never ever have arguments about money and neither of us has to go begging to someone else for permission to spend our own money. Just a suggestion.

Oooh - get you, you irascible ol' bugger:frenchkiss:
Miles' disposable income and commitment to family financial outlay is bound to be different to yours. For a start, he and his fiancee are both paying for your NHS pension!

That's certainly true Phil, but as a model for marital harmony, an agreed contribution to joint expenditure based upon relative incomes with the remainder of the balance left under the control of the individual earning it is much preferable to the seemingly popular model of letting "her indoors" control all of the financial resources and having to seek "permission" to spend your own money. Of course if there is nothing left after the joint commitments are met then you don't get a new lathe, but neither does she get a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

As for the NHS pension, unless they work in the NHS, they aren't paying for it directly as it is funded from the superannuation contributions of current NHS employees. Indirectly of course it is all funded from taxation. So I am also paying myself ROFL

Well, yes I accept your point, but as disposable income in many families is limited after pre-existing commitments have been met, anyone wishing to buy a new lathe may find it strategically helpful to run it past their other half before doing so, as it may impact adversely on the family finances - which was I believe what Miles may have been implying before you waded in there and told him to man up.

(Sorry about this Miles - don't think you have to join in here unless you want to. I'll handle Walter for you, it's OK. I, like you, live in the real world - Walter is retired):whistling:

I think it's a sad reality of life that many people don't have any disposable income left after bills, etc have been paid. Or, what is left has to be shared amongst treats for kids, days out, unexpected expenses, etc.

In an ideal world Walter's system would be great, but it only works if you are comfortably off enough to deal with all of the above and still have money left over.

That's it Mel - you tell him too:devil:

Of course in our house, penmaking equipment takes priority over almost everything else....but that's because it's our sole source of income, so if I can't make pens, we can't pay the bills....

That's why I have a new Pro Edge sitting in front of me

I've had a lathe go bang on me, horrible stuff to deal with at work and to top it all off, the cash machine just swallowed my card at lunch, reading the thread on here has been my sole source of laughter for today and is pretty much the only thing keeping me going!!!

Here is the update, I've spoken to the old man and he's agreed to take care of the next 5 birthday and Christmas presents with the purchase of a new lathe - good old dad!!! I have also made sure this is ok with the other half and she said so long as dads buying it then she hasn't got a problem. Now I have taken some other advice and I will be going to Newark this weekend to peruse and hopefully buy one, would be great to meet anyone else who may be venturing around the midlands?

All's well that ends well Miles. Have a great time at the Midland show - and spend wisely.

Photos on Monday or sooner a pre-requirement!

Second thoughts, I'll post a piccy tomorrow!

Miles, you've probably already realised, but when looking for a new lathe, don't forget to factor in the cost of new mandrels, chucks, etc if your morse taper and/or spindles sizes are different. :rolling:
