No doubt I will get a load of abuse from the fat pen lovers for this but in my opinion, and from my experience of helping beginners, I believe that most fat pens are not designed that way, but result from a reticence on the part of the turner to turn any thinner for fear of turning over thin.
I suspect that after your layoff you were just being a bit more cautious about turning away too much timber and when you return it to the lathe your confidence will gradually return and you will end up with a much better looking pen.
I personally look forward to seeing the finished Item Dan the only thing wrong with your first attempt was the shape it was regardless of shape well turned and with a decent finish on it shape to me is a personal thing so I rarely comment on the shape of a pen you done well mate please dont let our banter put you off and well done you for having the courage to show it in the first place you done well after na 8 year lay off mate keep em coming
