Our Jim is a right old meanie.

Well everyone knows he is, don't they? But why? I hear you ask.:thinks:

I wanted to buy his drum sander but he wouldn't sell - eh? - could've bought many many pints of beer with the procedes so. after a couple of days crying my eyes out :sob: i decided i couldn't give Axminster £750 for a new one :rolling: and nothing else for it but to haul my old bones out of the chair and make one.
Many youtube videos and a few scribbled sketches later 1 day later results in some progress using stuff from my piles of treasured items. I'm making it up as I go along tbh but can't see why it won't work.

A couple of self centering bearings, 5/8" steel rod, old 1ph motor, 25mm ply, 22mm melamine faced board, some 6mm inserts, hinges will be 6mm bolts. ( I drilled 3 hinge points at the back with inserts on back of ply sides and in the edge of the table. Initially fitted in the centre hole but dropping down will allow up to 130mm thick material ). Intend to make the drum from 110mm pvc soil pipe but will support it well into the ends and will be stepped ends with turned ply, mdf ?. Only has a width capacity of around 350mm as was limited by the length of shaft I have but will have to be enough!
I'll make up a mechanism to raise and lower the table front and later decide whether to make up some kind of infeed roller. Dust hood probably out of ply and polycarbonate. I had intended to make the feed table out of Mistral or Corian but then found the melamine chipboard.

Thoughts on improvements welcome but don't expect rapid progress because I'm known to procrastinate so this could take a long, long time. :funny: Sorry for the pics taken on 'phone.

So, back to Jim. Only joking mate, if you had sold it, you would be knocking on my door to get it back after a month - and I would have refused.

Very interesting Bob, I started to make one a couple of years ago, but where I was going to put it some bugger stuck a mill in that spot.
So I have been procrastinating ever since.
The stand I made out of wood, very heavy eucalypt has moved so much in a couple of years it would have made a good rocking chair.:whistling:

A friend who makes beaut boxes moved a few years ago from tons of space and uses a single garage so he designed and built his sander from a plan in the Australian woodworker , never looked back, tailer made for his purposes. Some of his document size boxes he uses natural edged burl boards for the tops giving a ready made lift for them.

After starting this thread I fully expected to have my privileges castrated after all a title besmirching our Jim, lord and creator of the forum can't be tolerated :goesred:

Anyway my bits are still intact :praying: and I've made a little progress with the sander but because there appeared to be no interest here, rather than clogging up the forum I'll mention (presuming I'm allowed) that I started a thread on UKW if anyone wants to read further. There are a number of members there who have built one and others who would like to.

I see it being a very useful bit of kit if it works as I hope and it certainly isn't a difficult project.

Glued up discs for the drum and made a barrel nut threaded to fit 12mm studding for the rise & fall mechanism, have spent not a single penny so far.

And the purpose of to save money or have exactly what you want? What width is it? Interested viewing.

Peter.

It was as I said Peter, I'm unwilling to hand over £769 gdp for a new one and even second hand are expensive. I could spend the money and easily justify to my other half because I recently sold some machines for almost twice that amount, but why should I though I definitely would have bought Jims machine had it still been available.

Even if you need to buy the bearings, shaft and maybe an old motor it would be a cheap item but because I already have all of these items and was motivated by the challenge it's worth a try. If it fails then I can salvage all the important parts for a different project and all it's cost me is time. Additionally I'm learning from my mistakes. Looking at all the home made stuff you have I know you must get the same buzz from making something from scratch!

The width of the drum will be only 360mm Peter because it's dictated by the length of 5/8" shaft I had available, but that's more than wide enough for my needs. Annoyingly I unearthed a longer length of shaft today while looking for som 12mm threaded rod so could have been wider had I wanted.

:

Just dont go out side on a dark night.

They are waiting for you.

Waiting, waiting patiently waiting.:beaten::funny:

I am very interested, as I want to build one my self, I got my bearings from Ebay as they were cheap as chips.
I had 4 X 1/2" X 1 m stainless rods, I was was going to use one of them but what I had read said this was too thin so bought 1" steel rod.
Look forwards to see you progress.

Hi Mark

I'll pm you the link to UKW as I think there aren't really any interested members on here and I don't want to clog up the forum with unwanted pics.

How's your build going Bob?

Nearly finished Phil.
I worked on it yesterday afternoon, partly correcting a couple of design faults :duh: Might get some time today to cut the dust extraction port and then true up the drum after which I can get the adhesive roll fitted and it's operational.
I'll post some pics of the finished article as soon as but didn't really want to clog this thread. Happy to post them all if enough interest of course.

I've posted a lot more pics on UKW as a number of interested members there so if not against the rules, the link is Drum sander project started. : Jigs, Tips & Shopmade Tools - UKworkshop.co.uk Remove the link if not permitted.

No, it's not against any rules Bob. It would be nice if you kept us all up to date here as well though - it's not clogging anything up at all. People might not be commenting in their droves, but there are still over 80 separate members here who have looked at your thread on over 200 occasions between them, who don't necessarily visit UKW, and the next member who registers on Penturners might be the very person who also wants to build one.

OK Phil, I'll put together a compilation with comments and appropriate pics. I've cracked on with the build because I have a habit of leaving projects half finished and didn't want this to be one of them, I've enjoyed it as well and can see it being a very useful machine. I'd still rather have taken Jims off his hands though.

Yep George hindsight is a wonderful thing, I should have offered him a pony

Had a few hours this afternoon, trued up the drum, fitted electrics, dust hood etc so within sight of the finishing post. Should be ready by the weekend but I'm happy so far as there's very little vibration so the drum seems pretty well balanced..
It's bl**dy heavy though so I've had to shove it on a mobile base as I can't move it.

Thats very nice Bob. I am a qualified independent tester so send it to me when its finished and I'll give it several years of scrutinising :-)
