I agree that is silly money, but if he is just trying to make some of his money back then that's up to him.
Like Jim says the quality of the first one is awful :nonono:

But oh dear he makes the Polaris so I don't care init?

Amazingly he advertises them as ladies pens....:whistling: never been a ladies pen in its life..

But then again the are complex characters ..

Anyway, pricing is left to them but I would not like to be in that market..

Chas - you are dead right, the quality of the first one is awful, but his learning curve doesn't seem to be too steep. From what I can make out he has sold six pens since 26 May, so he's hardly going to monopolise the UK pen market. Most of his sales appear to be olive wood pen blanks. He does drop himself in it with comments like the Olive wood has been seasoning in the Spanish sun. Well in that case I'll be leaving it well alone.

One thing that wasnt factored in is wasteage. I think he is getting his kits from Axminster, the name of the Polaris - the Premier - and the style of the Sierra and the centreband, yuch. What happens the first time one of them splits because as sure as eggs are eggs, that stuff will be dripping wet when it gets to the UK, perhaps we ought to buy a lot of olive wood blanks and see!

One thing I would bet on though is that this is not hobby related. If it were why on earth would you confine your hobby to turning Olive wood? Drive me nuts turning the same wood every day, although his total sales for several months would take us less than a couple of hours.

Wonder how long it will last? He'll get fed up with the sales invoices from paypal soon. If he cant sell big numbers on ebay for that amount there's a message there that's worth learning!

Sadly he isnt doing it to fund a hobby,

Just don't get things like this! All that trouble for what? About a quid profit after all the expense???????:nooidea:
If they're not bothered about making a decent profit, then get better at making them and give them to local schools, libraries etc.

Don't know about a decent profit, he could start with making a decent pen.

Whilst this kind of quality and pricing seems annoying, at the end of the day it is not unusual to see such poor work and low prices in local "craft" fairs and farmers markets and if he wants to make crap pens and sell them at a loss it is really none of my business.

As for being any kind of threat to my sales, he worries me about as much as The Pound Shop worries John Lewis. We are not in the same market.

The thing with this type of quality is the danger of been pigeonholed. You buy a pen of poor quality and you spread the word not to buy these along the lines of “I bought one and it looks and feels awful” to friends and relations. You are selling similar styled pens of much better quality but losing sales because of the poor quality sold on ebay.

My thoughts exactly Walter, I don't buy into the idea that someone producing a substandard product affects people's view of my products, it's all about educating customers to understand the quality behind your price.
There are cheap alternatives to nearly every product that is made, this doesn't stop folks buying the more expensive alternative, in fact in buying the cheap model it can make people realise the old adage, you get what you pay for, is in fact usually spot on.

I brought this same seller to everyones attention 9 months ago and was told that it was a regular on this site selling to recoup his overheads at cost price as it is a hobby only .
He had recently become bereaved i remember and everyone was kind to the gentleman and made me feel a tad embarrased that i brought the subject to everyones attention, is it the same chap from Derby selling these ?

Could well be the same person and in which case if it is I feel the same as you for bringing the subject up.
Let's put this one to bed and let the guy get on with doing what he feels he needs to do.

Cheers

If I worried what other people thought or said about me I would never get out of bed in the mornings. As it is, what they think or say is none of my business so I don't let it worry me.

I don't see any problem as the guy is doing what he is entitled to do, getting rid of his stuff the best way he can really! I don't sell what I do, It keeps me active but if i did I would never worry about anyone else if I get the price I wanted, If your stuff is good it will sell!:thinks:
